    ... my 10 year old lad is wanting a quad bike for Christmas, one of those 50cc things. I haven't a clue what sort to buy, how much a decent one would be, whether you need to be insured to ride them, where you can legally ride them etc.

    Don't mind getting him one, as long as there is somewhere fairly local to ride it without getting the law on my back!

    Anybody ever bought one for their lad or know owt about them?

    Wouldn't let my lads near one.

    Carcroft rings a bell, but wouldn't quote me on it. It's a council owned site if I remember correctly, so it might be worth checking on doncaster.gov.uk

    mate got one for £600 2nd hand, 250 cc, so id imagine a little monkey one would be quite cheap. I reckon you could pick one up for £300 (+).
    Think you only have to insure it if you intend to use it on the road, for which you need a full driving licence. In other words you wont need to insure it.
    I know about a few illegal places but dont know about legal ones
