"Our next fixture saw us away at Gillingham on an extremely hot and humid late August day. The whole experience seemed surreal because we must have had 80% of possession but barely had a shot on goal. Defensively, we were unable to cope with their more direct style and we lost the game 3-0. On the long drive back that evening, myself and my colleagues, who had travelled with me in my car, genuinely couldn't work out whether we were a decent side who passed the ball well but were short of firepower, or were just a tippy-tappy outfit, all show and no substance. We were soon to find out because a ghastly run culminating in a 3-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday saw us pick up only 2 wins during that period... Not only were concerns expressed about results and performances, but his transfer policy was also the source of some worry. What particularly perturbed the board was the manager's signing of midfielder Peter Sand. The fact that Sand clearly wasn't good enough for the First Division was almost incidental to the fact that the manager wanted to sign yet another midfielder when it was clear that he hadn't adequately replaced Neil Shipperley." - JOHN DENNIS on Nigel Spackman (from Matthew Murray's book)
