And frankly, who cares so long as he succeeds?

The man blamed by fans for Leeds United's financial meltdown and subsequent relegation from the Premiership is determined to build Cardiff a home fit for the 21st century.

Ridsdale's reputation was at a low ebb 18 months ago as were Cardiff's finances. And their fans' despair went into over-drive when he was appointed by club owner Sam Hammam.

Had Dracula taken charge of the bloodbank?

Yet it could transpire to be the shrewdest move Hammam has made in his six-year reign.

Promises have now been replaced with business plans as Ridsdale enters the final straight of transforming fantasy into reality - as the latest target for the stadium to open is for the 2008/09 season kick-off.

City's deputy chairman looks to be pushing the right buttons and greasing the right wheels.

Could he be on the verge of saving a club with debts of £30m from oblivion despite selling off star-name players last summer?

But Ridsdale knows Cardiff's survival and future success is hopeless without the new stadium.

He estimates the Bluebirds lose up to £5m a year in revenue due to a lack of hospitality and corporate suites at Ninian Park and is confident the new stadium factor would swell Cardiff's attendance by at least 5,000 over the season - that's an estimated £1.5m.

Even though his initials are PR, he's no self-publicist so it's up to developer Paul Guy of PMG Estates to describe Ridsdale's impact as the driving force.

"Twelve months ago this club was facing a very deep, black hole and nobody thought we were going to get out of it," said Guy.

"Peter and his team have turned the situation around."

Since Ridsdale took charge, supermarket giants Asda and CostCo have been secured as anchor tenants and if the development meets approval from the council in September, bulldozers should be on site before Christmas.

But Ridsdale doesn't want the credit, at least not yet.

"This isn't about me, it's about Cardiff City Football Club and there's a lot of people involved," he insisted.

"Cardiff City have an opportunity to build a new stadium and it is what the club needs if it has any aspirations of being a Premier League club."

Cardiff city council have received the latest plans and financial blueprint to prove how a club still deep in the red can build a multi-million pound arena. The stadium is the centrepiece of the £100m project, which includes a new athletics stadium and incorporates the money-making retail outlets.

City must find 30 per cent of the costs with their retail business partners picking up the rest of the tab.

"The fundamental change is getting the retailers signed up," said Ridsdale. "This scheme is majority funded by the retail park so we couldn't progress until we had anchor tenants.

"The big turning point was signing up those two retailers and the other turning point was providing the council with a business plan that gave them the confidence that we as a football club could sustain a viable club until the new stadium is open and sustain it thereafter.

"We have now put together a plan that demonstrates the money is there. I'm confident the council will sign off this business plan.

"I'm comfortable with our long-term debt and our financial situation now - I wasn't 12 months ago.

"We simply made tough decisions by selling our top players like Danny Gabbidon and Cameron Jerome.

"Most of the cash raised from player sales has paid off creditors while a small proportion of the money has been invested into improving the squad.

"We haven't got banks banging down our door demanding their money today.

"We've some loan notes that don't have to be repaid until 2012 - and we know how we're going to pay those back.

"It isn't affecting how we run the football club or our ability to invest in this project or in the playing squad."

Ridsdale has adapted the plans for the 30,000-seater stadium to fit into a budget he believes the club can afford as he, better than anyone else, knows the dangers of spending beyond your means.

"I've made a lot of mistakes in the past, but have also done a few things right.

"So I'll learn from my mistakes and try to repeat the successes," he said.

"Even though we'd like to do it sooner rather than later, we don't need Premiership football by a certain time as, despite constant threats to the contrary by some of the biggest clubs, the Premier League will never become a closed shop.

"The Premiership will never be out of reach financially either as Watford proved last season.

"They had one of the lowest wage-bills in the Championship but, thanks to a good manager, a good blend of players and a bit of luck they showed the way forward for clubs like Cardiff."

Ridsdale's road to redemption is far from complete, though.

The former FA executive board member, who quit in December 2002 due to Leeds' faltering financial situation, recently failed in his bid for election to the Football League Board.

"It was probably a blessing in disguise that I didn't succeed," he insisted. "The club felt we had to throw my name into the ring because those positions come up just once every three years.

"In all honesty, I didn't really need the distraction."

Deep down, he understands his troubles at Leeds probably didn't help.

But Ridsdale now controls his own destiny again. Success would restore respect. Failure is not an option.

Eh? "He estimates the Bluebirds lose up to £5m a year in revenue due to a lack of hospitality and corporate suites at Ninian Park...."
£5m pa in corporate and hospitality? The man's completely ga-ga.

I always wonder what happened to the time he spent at Oakwell?
Did it disappear?
Did Gowdon Shephard wose it down the toywet?
It would definatewy make the stowy more reawistic to mention the miwwion qwid he overspent at BFC. It always comes acwoss that he has learnt from his mistakes at Leeds and he is better fow the expewience.
Utter bowwox

To be fair, this bit is a good bit of business City must find 30 per cent of the costs with their retail business partners picking up the rest of the tab.
RE: To be fair, this bit is a good bit of business you should see their balance sheet !!! Oh but you can't, well not the holding company or Rugwick (the ultimate holding company) as their accounts for May 05 haven't been filed at companies house. Now nearly four months overdue.
RE: To be fair, this bit is a good bit of business how long do they have to get them in-or doesn't it matter?
RE: To be fair, this bit is a good bit of business 10 months after the year end before the fines start. The fine so far is £250, Six mths late £500, 12mths late £1,000. The company could be stuck off and/or directors prosecuted for late filing and then disqualified from acting as directors. The size of the fine is minute at the side of the debts, it's just the conclusions that may be drawn by financial institutions etc.
