When I lived down south for 5 years, I quickly realised the idea the the North lagged behind the South was very untrue. I also seemed to not notice that there is any bias between the two in terms of media coverage. However since Ive been home I have noticed that the media place a heavy bias on reporting southern news stories. This is evident in the flooding. It seemed to take the tv news a while to pick up on the stories up north before they covered them in depth. Now the south has suffered the same fate they seem to be right there giving it loads of coverage and stressing how dredful it has been. OR IS IT ME BEING PARANOID.
RE: I know exactly what you mean... ...i was watching CNN today as i often do and the whole situation has got absolutely loads of coverage, and this is an international news channel we're talking about - i don't remember the similar situation up here even getting a mention CNN, let alone the live broadcasts from several different correspondents that I have seen today. Must say it does look pretty bad though, probably worse than up here but then again I am probably falling for the over enthusiastic media reaction that was bound to come with such an event happening down south. Today I've got the impression that the general media, made up of your london types consider what happened to us and our neighbours was merely an inconvenience but they seem to be putting across a message that what is happening in Gloucester/Oxfordshire etc is a 'disaster'!
My favourate quote about the floods in Donny was when someone was complaining to Toby Foster about how they felt neglected by the media after the intial interest. To which he replied " Be honest how many times do you want to see Harry Gration in a boat"
I saw some reports on CNN a couple of weeks back when Sheffield and Hull were under water. They reported that Sheffield was North London. FFS.
