SOUTHAMPTON boss Nigel Adkins is lining up a January swoop for Barnsley captain Jacob Butterfield. The attacking midfielder, 21, has been a revelation this season and Saints will bid £1.5million.
I wouldn't. This lad has some serious potential and if he continues to develop under Hill he will be worth a hell of a lot more than that. Butts is the most naturally gifted player at that club and just needed to develop which he is now starting to do. Look at what other clubs get for their potential talent. If we sell at that price we have been mugged again - IMHO.
Agreed Personally I can't see Butterfield being here next season, think he'll take the best offer he can, and if Southampton are offering £1.5 million for him, i'd bite their hands off, because otherwise we risk losing him for sweet FA in the summer. Don't get me wrong, ideal scenario is that he signs a new contract and continues to improve at Oakwell, but historically, talented players generally leave the club rather than stay when in this position.
Re: Agreed christ on a bike... we cant lose him for free he's under 24 !! we can of course get shafted by the tribunal system but thats another matter....
I'd hope we could persuade him to sign a new contract, seems another Brian Howard situation could be upon us. Good to know we've learnt our lesson.....
Why? How much of that would be used on improving the squad? How much of the one million we got for Shackell was spent on improving the squad?
As everyone forgot... "This lad has some serious potential and if he continues to develop under Hill he will be worth a hell of a lot more than that." He's out of contract at the end of the season...so.. 1...So we cant hold out for **** all.... 2...If true I cant see anyone paying owt like a decent fee for a player that's only four months left on a contract.
Re: As everyone forgot... even if he signs a new contract there'll probably be a 500k release clause slyed in...
Re: Why? How much of that would be used on improving the squad? I would presume that its goes to pay the current players wages....because of the shortfall in ST's
Thats the worrying thing, we'll try around Xmas when he's got a further 10 decent games under his belt, had more clubs watching him & by that time only half a season left before he can go for peanuts. Hill has stated that he would like to tie him to a longer contract, guess its out of his hands then..
No doubt I'm just trying to understand why a fan would be desperate to sell a very good player only for the proceeds to go in to the black hole marked operational costs.
Re: No doubt But we all know the nature of black holes....I think it was bfcdave's who posted the year on year shortfall of about 2 mil wont it, and that tab being picked up presumably by PC .....its also common knowledge that PC aint chippin in nowt else....so are we at the stage where we need to sell one player a season just to survive...id guess any saleable asset...will be sold..
Someone has already said it further up the thread, but I'll say it again. As long as we offer him a comparable contract to last year, he can't leave for free in the summer. He's under 24 and therefore unable to leave on a bosman. It actually means that we are in a stronger position in January as clubs may want to avoid a wages fight in the summer and going to a tribunal. In reality, if we hold onto him until the summer and he continues playing well he'll probably be worth considerably more than he would be in January.
