Special Delivery items - what happens if you are not in to receive them? Are they taken back to the post office, or can they be left with a neighbour if you leave a message on the door?

Depends on the delivery man. Some insist it must be signed and return it to the PO. Others will get a neighbors signature, and allow them to take it in. Depends how "jobsworth" the postie is.

    Not an expert

I think it depends on exactly how its sent and what it is.
You can try leaving a message to leave at neighbours - that usually works - unless it needs to be signed personally for -

Officially, if you are not in to receive the item, the postie will leave a WYWO (While You Were Out) Card. You then have to go to the Sorting Office to collect it.

Some posties will leave it with a neighbour, but this practice is frowned upon.

if your not in, i will leave a "slip left" doo dar and pop the letter back in the first post office i pass, it does not have to be the persons mail who answers the door,as long as they are of a certain age, which i dont know, so im a semi pro then!
