As previously mentioned, I'm setting up some boxes to help "unlock memories" in older people / people with dementia. These will be themed around various sports - football, rugby, cricket and also general sports.

The contents have to be portable, iconic and relevant to older people - i.e. stuff from 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s.
I've got quite a bit of football stuff together, but I'm really struggling on Rugby League. If anyone has any suggestions on what to include (names of iconic RL stars, games, memories), or even better has any old programmes, shirts, badges etc, they are willing to donate, please let me know.

Any other items on cricket, tennis, rugby union also gladly received. It's all for a good cause. :)

The memory boxes will be made available on loan to care homes, and organisations working with older people. The aim is to stimulate conversation/ memory.

My only 'memory' of Rugby League is Neil Fox (of perhaps Wakefield Trinity - but I may well be wrong there) missing with a conversion that was the last kick of the match from under the posts that would have won the RL Challenge Cup - and he missed it!!!!

On second thoughts better not remind some of the older generation of this...........................

It was his brother Don Fox and the pitch was waterlogged after a down pour.

The Watersplash Final - I was there, backed Trinity to win.

I went to the semi, but couldn't go to the final because my dad had to work. The final was controversial on several levels, the pitch was so waterlogged it should have been postponed, the refereeing was dubious (as far as Trinity fans were concerned) including a last minute penalty try for Leeds given for an offence apparently nobody saw. Trinity scored a totally bizarre try straight from the kick off, leaving a conversion in front of the posts by one of the best kickers in the game to win the match. Poor old Don Fox sliced it wide and the whistle went for a one point victory to Leeds, but it led to a lot of suspicion unfair in my view... because the Fox brothers owned a betting shop and stood to lose a lot of money if Trinity the hot favourites won..
Incidentally Don Fox was awarded the man of the match award.

    Update

    Update:
This project has been approved for Yorkshire wide launch. Which means 2 things
    1. There is a very good chance that one of these boxes will be available in Barnsley, on loan to care homes/ older peoples organisations.
    2. I now need enough stuff to fill 18 boxes! Help!

So please consider if you have any old stuff (pre 1980s) that you are willing to donate.

Please excuse the long list but it makes it easier for people to know if they have stuff to donate. N.B. Any sport, but we need stuff that triggers memories in people who are now aged 70 -100 yrs old.

Player cards, cigarette cards, photos, programmes, annuals, scarves, hats, shirts, rattles, snuff box, pipe/ tobacco, liniment, dubbin, linseed oil, bats/ balls, equipment, boxing gloves, dvds, posters, brut/ old spice, soap on a rope, bovril, Roy of the Rovers comics, Subbuteo games, solitaire sets, sports themed board games, sports themes (music), flat cap, skull cap (rugby), tennis racket & press, athletics spikes/ vests, greenflash shoes, vintage football / rugby boots, bar skittles, tiddly winks.

PM me if you think you have anything suitable. Happy to collect or pay postage. Cheers. :)
