not personally... but my dad is always mentioning him or plaers around that era. how's things going bud?
RE: not personally... He took one against Newport that nearly broke the crossbar - and the ball landed somewhere close to the semi circle. Mind you; it could be rose-tinted specs with regards where the ball landed, but i well remember him hitting the bar with an unbelievable force. I'm doing fine Nez lad. How's it going your end? I should be sorting out all my stuff soon - under pressure from Mrs to tidy shelves and get papwerwork in order

Rochdale at home rings a bell Think that was one of 2 goals he scored in about 45 years and 7845 appearances
RE: Rochdale at home rings a bell First game of season..... Everyone around me were shocked to see Spud pick up the ball for the penalty beforehand. Brian Joicey was our regular penalty taker at the time wasn't he?
Clarkey thought world o him.Took him to Leeds,2 divisions above.1 year later they wo laikin us.......
Yep! Didn't Clarkie also take that scout - Martin whatsisname? I once saw Spud hosting the Miss Barnsley competition at Locke Park at the Miner's Gala and he was well sozzled, even fumbling one of the lasses' arses and joking about it.
That's it Seem to remember he planted it in the back of the net, like he'd been taking penalties all his career. Sat with him for the beam back of the recent game against ..... now who was it?...... can't quite remember...... hang on, it's nearly there...... Got it - Liverpool.
Cant remember , i was always pissed at the Demo misen ,Mc devitt sorted all t lads art wit beer tickets
Played as an emergency striker.... Away at Brentford 1963-64 season. Drew 1-1. Spud did not manage to 'find the net.' Played as an emergency WINGER home to Luton at the start of the 1966-67 season (we were at the bottom for ages). But Reds won 2-1 AND MURPHY SCORED the winner! Scored the first in the 3-3 thriller away at Bristol Rovers at the start of the 1969-70 season. Scored a PENALTY in the first game of the season against Rochdaled 1977-78 - the first goal in a 4-0 win. That looks pretty much it. I am just amazed, looking at the record, at how few games he played in the early seasons of his career without moving on to another club.
Scored the second goal Against Rochdale in a 4-0 from the penalty spot on the opening day of the 1977/78 season.
