With the formation(s) as we have seen so far this season, I can't see a lot of point in signing more wide players, even though that is going to be key to the way we defend and counter-attack. I think the biggest need to strengthen is target man/striker. Wilkinson fits the bill, but is only on loan. Winnall does not fit the role well, but did his bit at Millwall by all accounts. The Michael Smith deal seems to have gone quiet, although we seemed to given a clue that something could happen after Holgate moved, which he now has. Are Swindon now reluctant to sell, given they have picked up early-season injuries to forwards already? Cooper seems to be saying Smith wants to move farther north and can go for around £400k, which would be within our range. What about George Waring, though? He would fit the bill perfectly, knows the team and did well for us last season. Would £400k be enough to persuade Stoke to part with him? Have we tried them? George would be my top signing to strengthen the squad given the formations we seem to be playing.
Just checked the Stoke web-page and he does not have a squad number for the season. What are we waiting for? Better get in there before Port Vale pick him up on loan!!!!
I'd be delighted to get Waring too, and agree we need a big lad up top. From what I've seen of Wilkinson (although limited), I don't think he's suited to being the target man. I think we need a left back too, given that Nyatanga is being used out of position already.
