You could say we have TWO who could make the step up and bring us some money. Butterfield and Steele. One on his way on the cheap now, the other looking at 12 months left. Steele should come with a £3-5m price tag in today's market but once the season gets going knock off half a million+ every month with his contract running down. So, if we want to keep the star player get him signed up! We all know what he can do but have a look at this - http://youtu.be/P8eUX5JjCdQ Dare I say he is too good for the defence in front of him (and us).
He should have been offered a three year contract by now. Instead we are willing to not learn from mistakes and instead offer him a new contract around October/November with the risk of him going cheaply in January.
Our player of the season and IMO the best keeper outside of the premier league and we are planning on leaving it until November before we start to negotiate a new contract. I just don't understand our transfer / contract policy.
I wonder if he's indicated he won't sign a new contract, either due to ambition or the fact that we won't be able to offer him anything like his current wage, but we don't want to publically say that at this point? Personally i hope that isn't true and we do keep him but on the flip side I suppose it could be argued that we would be a better balanced team if we paid higer wages on average than a lot of money to just one player?
But if Steele had intimated, behind the scenes, that he wasn't willing to extend his stay, then surely it would be in our interests as a club to sell him now??? And there is absolutely zero talk anywhere, of him being available, or of other clubs chasing his signature. So that leads me to believe the club are again thinking short-term, and that should Luke have another fantastic 4 months up until January, he will be sold for our usual fee of 500k. Bloody Einstein and his bloody defining of mental bloody illness.
Spot on YT. All the signals from the club are that its their choice to wait until November before they begin contract talks with him and by then it could be too late. I just wish we would stop dropping clangers with transfers.
I suppose though it wouldn't be very wise to let other clubs know that he's not willing to sign a new contract as this would reduce the price we would get for him? To be honest I haven't got a clue and was just posing a thought. If we are waiting until November though I agree it is not very bright.
I can't understand why we're not wanting to tie him down with a new contract to us. Top quality keeper that could go very far and I hope he does. I just hope that, when he does go, we get what he is actually worth: 4-5m.
Straight from the Don http://www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk/sport/article/5156/no-contract-talks-with-steele-this-summer Of course it doesn't say if Steele has said he won't sign but if that was the case I would have expected him to be put on the transfer list. It looks like we are calling the shots and considering our track record with transfers its a very risky strategy. If we lose Steele for nothing due to playing silly beggars and delaying things its not going to look good to the fans.
Steele told Adrian Durham (via powers of Twitter) few weeks ago that he has unfinished business at Barnsley and won't be moving back to Peterborough.
Watching that video has made it even more clear that he needs a new contract. Some world-class saves being put in there. Also made me realise how many years our defence hasn't been up to scratch for. God knows why Steele isn't in Ukraine right now, he bloody well should be.
Where does Don mention Steele in that comment? Answer is he doesn't. As I see it the writer is linking the comment to Steele whereas Don has spoken only generally about players possibly coming out of contract.
The question was put to Don Rowing - "Will the club look to extend Luke Steele's contract this summer?"
Bang on. Peterborough offered George Boyd and Taylor a contract in the middle of the last season. They've got 12 months left, turned it down and now are on the transfer list. Good management.
Was talking to a Peterborough fan last week whilst on holiday. He said that Barry Fry offers a new contract to players when they have one year to go. Any player refusing to sign goes straight on the list. Seems that BF is good at that but not necessarily managment in general. First thing he did was to close their academy which was quickly reinstated when the new owners took over and BF was moved to director of football.
OK so the direct quotes are general but Steele is in that group of players being referred to and the point being discussed is that we may leave it too late and lose a star player for peanuts or nothing at all.
