According to the Barnsley Chronicle. He doesn't mind competition but he thinks that Hill should name is No.1. Is he getting nervous?
Having just seen the article now, you suspect the Chron prefer the new guy.... Having chosen a pic of Alnwick catching a ball, and Steele not. Ha
I'd stick with Steele, considering his great form last season. But I hope Alnwick pushes him, and that given a chance he's more of a Brad Friedel than a David Button...
Surely there is no way Steele can be dropped. Good season and player of the year so he must be our number one for now but Alnwick needs to push him for the position and provide some real competition.
After the reports from my Burnley friend who's seen Alnwick in "action", and as someone who's criticised Steele in the past I'm praying to God Steel is no.1 choice. He nearly fell on the floor when I told him who we'd signed, said it was some of the most inept goalkeeping he'd ever seen, and this is coming from someone who's opinion I respect.
I have heard something similar today, from what I had read on here I thought we had got a great keeper, sounds like he was more like Mannone when he was on loan! Rather fed up now!!
I'll wait and see how the lad plays for Barnsley Rather than jumping the gun and deciding that he isn't very good. It doesn't matter how he performed on loan at Burnley or anywhere else for that matter. All that matters is how he plays for us.
Until Hill ha seen them both in training and friendlies he can't possibly decide who his number 1 is. It's too early for a decision like that.
I work with a Leicester fan and he was very impressed with Alnwick when he was on loan there. He thinks we've got a great keeper on a free. Football is all about opinions, let's just wait and see and give the lad a chance.
Re: I'll wait and see how the lad plays for Barnsley Spurs played him in goal against Burnley :- Hint: He's the yellow flappy one between the Spurs posts http://videos.sapo.pt/u5JoavOS6zpAp9p0OrhK
He's probably a bit nervous because we've brought in a new keeper and are prepared to let Steele's contract run down, refusing to offer a new one.
I really don't care I will NOT prejudge the lad before he's even pulled on a shirt for Barnsley. I'll only judge him, from a footballing stance, on how he performs for Barnsley. That attitude has stood me in good stead since the 1960's. If it makes me small minded, thick or whatever, so be it. I'll openly admit I don't know anything about football.
A one legged man with no arms could not be any worse than Preece when he played, great journo, but poor keeper. In my opinion that is.
Re: I really don't care I hope that he's great. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these Keith Hill knockers - I love the man. But, my Burnley friend who knows one of the coaches at Scunni warned me Dagnall was poor - "no footballing brain" was the feedback, he doesn't give these opinions lightly. So I hope he's a brilliant keeper, but when I know someone who knows much more about football than me, and I like to think I know at least "something", tells me he was shocking, I'm inclined to think he's not going to present any kind of real challenge to Steele. Just passing on the info from someone who's actually seen him play, by all means ignore. Like someone said footballs a game of opinions, I'm not pre-judging him, just trying to add a dash of realism to those who think he's here to challenge Steely (who btw, I have grave doubts about anyway, so don't mistake me for a some kind of fanboy for Steele, cos I certainly ain't that!).
The point I've been trying to make Is that it doesn't matter how well, or poorly, a player has performed at another club. The fans from other clubs may, or may not, be honest in their assessment of a player's abilities. For a couple of examples, Sheron got a bagful of goals for Stoke where he was a big favourite, but didn't repeat that strike rate for us. Aylott was slated by Chelsea fans, but became a legend at Barnsley. All I care about is a player's contribution to our team. That is what I'll judge him on and I certainly won't do it before he's played for us.
