he'll be 33 years old for bulk of next season, and he cannot play 2 games in a week due to long standing injury which has no doubt effected his ability and appearences this season. At best he was and is an average Champ defender with his best days behind him. He has been a great servant to the club but this should not colour anyone's view on his potential contribution going forward.
Pretty much got it spot on for me. Good servant for us but no time for being sentimental in football. He will be one of our highest earners yet can't play two games a week and isn't likely to see many games even when fit. It would have been disrespectful to him to offer him reduced terms to keep him as a fringe player.
