Straight after promotion he brought up the suggestion he may not stay and needed to talk with owners to see what the best way forward was. He perhaps saw the England job as a way out. Or maybe the owner has effectively constructively dismissed him for talking to the FA? So glad we have the owner we have.

I think it's more to do with the owners there than the England job. Before the Euros had started press already had articles of him not being happy with transfer dealings. He wanted to get business done early for a very tough job of keeping them in the premiership. He's probably (rightly) lost patience in his lack of backing.
