Steve Bruce was reluctant to comment on the post-match brawl that followed Birmingham's 1-0 defeat at Barnsley, but questioned the involvement of the oppositions' assistant manager.

Birmingham suffered a second successive defeat at Oakwell as a result of Daniel Nardiello's second-half strike.

But there were angry scenes after the match after Birmingham's Neil Danns and Barnsley's Bobby Hassell were sent off for violent conduct, and Bruce was unhappy with Barnsley assistant boss Ryan Kidd's participation.

"That's going to take the headlines, but I won't be making any comment until I've seen the referee's report," he said.

"But I saw their assistant wading in, so what's all that about?

"We will see the video evidence and make a decision from there over whether to appeal."

Barnsley boss Simon Davey attempted to restore order as several players became involved in the argument, but he believes the incident was just 'handbags at 10 paces'.

Davey is also confident that an appeal against Hassell's suspension will prove successful.

"There was an altercation between the players, but Bobby said he didn't do anything," he said.

"The referee has said he will look at it and we will appeal because we don't want to be without Bobby for three games.

"It seemed to be handbags at 10 paces and that's why I went onto the pitch to try to calm things down.

"If something got said or what, I don't know - it just happened as soon as the whistle went. As far as I'm concerned, no one from our side said anything and it had all calmed down after the match in the changing rooms."

The result saw Barnsley move out of the bottom three, and - having lost 5-1 at Ipswich on Saturday - Davey was delighted with the performance.

"This was the perfect response and, from the overall 90 minutes, we deserved it.

"The defending was superb and, although it's great to be out of the bottom three, we want to make sure we're there come May 6th."

Bruce, however, was left increasingly frustrated with his strikers as they missed numerous chances and admitted he is desperate to see the injured Andy Cole make his debut.

"We created chances - two or three in the first half and maybe eight in the second half," he said.

"The strikers have not produced the goods since Christmas and have not given us the return that we expected.

"We tried to rectify that by bringing Andy Cole in on loan, but then he got a hamstring injury.

"He was sat there in the stands and must have wished he was on the pitch and that all the chances we had had fallen to him."

Just watched it on Sky Sports News....

Looked like Kidd was trying to break everyone up...

Bruce in the press conference: 'I don't know what Kidd was doing wading in...' blah blah blah... 'but I can't really comment on it '

So you can't comment, but you did.

Definately ran around the left hand side of the scrum and pulled three or four players away. Its clear on tv.

Danns just took a run up and waded straight into someones back.
