Why? What are his credentials? He's managed one club and done a mediocre job - don't forget he was favourite before the quarter and semi-finals. It just seems more a case of "yes he fits the part - amenable, won't swear at the press, won't embarrass us at post match soirees, an all round nice diplomatic guy". That's what stinks about all English 'old-school' establishments - MCC, FA, English LTA, House of Lords. Sod the credentials, did your father wear the right coloured tie at Oxbridge, or did he not? I'm not suggesting McClaren is an old-school type, I don't think he is, but it looks like one of those appointments (if it happens) where the decision is made, now go away and justify it to the proles. McClaren will be such a bland, disappointing appointment. O'Neil has the passion, will call it as it is and won't be afraid to buck the system, so that's him out then. Next best would be Allardyce. Then Curbishley, then Terry Butcher, then Stuart Pearce, and so on. It bothers me though, and back to my original point, why is McClaren the chosen one over and above, say, all those listed plus the likes of Pardew? Jewell? Burley? Taylor?
you've just about covered it mclaren ffs WHY!! shame about scolari though'' but now it's gotta be allardyce i would have thought with pearce involved somewhere along the line but it's nowt to do with the fan's , so we should all keep our big gob's shut ....
He did coach Manure to the 'Treble' .... but I have to agree, he is not a very inspiring appointment.
Mediocre job? He has won Middlesborough the League cup, got them the final of the UEFA cup and semi of the FA Cup. Not bad for a small premier league club who had not won a single trophy before he took over.
Because he is Safe He is already an insider and wont be too much trouble wanting his own way. Having said that of the English possibilities he is the only one with any international management experience at club or country level - and has not done too badly with Middlesborough this season in Europe. Its very surprising that Scholari was considered as he isnt English and woulndt do as he is told - so having established that principle please give it to Martin O'neil
RE: Because he is the best one for the job It's time you got your brain in gear and gave Steve a bit of credit for what he has done.
His coaching ability is second to none. Why did Ferguson head hunt him from Derby? Well, it was because he was the best man for the job. At Middlesborough he has won cups which the highly rated Robson didn't do. He hasn't had to bring in an ex-England manager to help him out! He takes a small Town Club to a European Final. He has been an England Coach for 5 years and has vast experience of World and European Competition. Why O'Neill should be so attractive to you is beyond me except he has won things in a league which, apart from two clubs, is of Championship standard. McClaran and Big Sam would be a hell of a partnership for England. Personally I think that either of them would make an excellent England Manager.

Allardyce? FFS - what credentials does he have? The England manager needs more than a big gob and passion, in fact he doesn't really need those - you want a manager who can handle the top players, the players shouldn't need motivating and don't need coaching - they have that anyway...just need a guy who can cope with the top players - 2 names.... Wenger and Ferguson
RE: Because he is the best one for the job I think i've read on here that No 2's should never be promoted to No 1-But putting that to oneside-I agree with Jonny Coachman in this instance.Best man for the job. Easier than managing Middlesboro or Bolton.Top players who don't need motivating. If we had a poll on the England team the final choice wouldn't vary much,so where's the difficulty.Just keep your head down and your flies buttoned.
Seems to be good at bringing young players through and does have experience of the set up. On the minus side, he has the personality of a sloth and yes, he's done well enough with a unglamorous side, but they have plenty of money and have shown little in the league. Not confident of his ability to handle the big name players and the egos in the England set up.
Sven isn't bursting with Charisma is he and he looks like Professor Yaffel from Bagpuss. My personal choice if we were sticking with an English manager would be Steve Coppell. Although success at several unfashionable clubs over the years and an absence from the Prem will count against him. Of the English options being talked about it would have to be Maclaren at present. Does have some success in the cup, knows the set up and players and appears to be keen to mix youth and experience.
Steve Coppell Showed how well he can deal with pressure during his Manchester City debacle. If you can't cope with the Manchester Evening News on your back, what hope have you got when the Sun and Mirror got their knives and turnips out?
