By Simon MeeksBarnsley A YEAR and a month ago Dean Windass was Oakwell's most wanted. A £100,000 offer was tabled to Bradford for the well-travelled striker. 'Up the ante or forget it,' Barnsley chairman Gordon Shepherd was told in effect. Windass went no-where, Barnsley went up a division four months later. The ex-North Ferriby, Aberdeen, Oxford, Middle sbrough, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United striker finally arrives at Oakwell tonight with Hull City and on a mission to push Barnsley back down towards League One. Hull manager Phil Brown has taken the 37-year-old on loan. So far no dividend. Windass has played four, scored none and yet to appear in a winning team for his new employers. Brown has looked on the big centre forward as an impact player. An alternative off the bench to former Barnsley trainee Sam Parkin, among others. Tonight other recent arrivals at Hull, Nathan Doyle and Ray Parlour offer Brown a welcome selection dilemma as he tries to overtake Barnsley in the Championship survival race. With Ian Ashbee returning from suspension and Dean Marney also recovering well from a thigh strain, the manager's midfield options now look formidable. Parlour has a pedigree of Premiership class but at 34 he was given a free transfer out of Middlesbrough. The former Arsenal and England midfielder impressed in his Hull debut in the 2-2 draw at Derby County the weekend before last, emerging as a second-half substitute. But having not played a full competitive fixture all season after being out of favour with Middlesbrough, question marks surround his fitness. Brown however has indicated he could give Parlour his full debut tonight. "We are looking a lot stronger across the squad," he said."We've got a lot of strength in depth, but that will only be reflected on how we perform in the next few weeks." Brown brings a team who last won away from Humberside on New Year's Day. Two goals from 33-year-old Nick Barmby brought a 2-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday back then. Ex-England star Barmby has no chance of playing tonight. He has ankle ligament damage. Last Updated: 20 February 2007
Fancy splashing out on Windass and Parlour just to try to keep them in this division. Madness spending all that money on experienced players when it could go onLeague 2 midfielders.
"An alternative off the bench to former Barnsley trainee ...... ....Sam Parkin" ......... pillocks, when did he play for us then??????
