Leon Constantine turned down Championship strugglers Barnsley for football reasons ... not because of the money.

Port Vale's 18-goal hit-man says he would have moved to Oakwell if his only concern was the cash after being offered more than double his current pay-packet.

Instead, he is now hoping to be picked for Vale's home game with Northampton on Saturday.

Vale agreed to sell Constantine to Barnsley in return for 125,000 and striker Marc Richards, but he would have been joining a club already four points from safety in the Championship relegation zone after just one win in their last 10 outings.

Constantine said: "If it was to do with money, then I wouldn't still be here. Barnsley offered me nearly two-and-a-half times what I am on here. It is nothing to do with that. It is about where I see my career going.

"The facts are the club accepted a bid and I felt it would have been rude not to talk to Barnsley after they showed an interest in me.

"They were nice people and it is a nice club, but it just didn't feel right." The striker's contract now looks set to run down to the end of the season, unless Vale receive another offer before the transfer window closes.

Constantine added: "There's no hiding the fact I want to play in the Championship - but not for four months before coming back to League One.

"I went home, spoke to my family and this is the decision we came to. I have no regrets, and I just want to get on the football field now."

Constantine understands the club's concerns about losing him on a free, but added: "Just because I am out of contract in the summer doesn't mean I need to be pushed out.

"I am back here and hopefully can get back into the side.

"I want to start scoring goals again. I don't think it should have anything to do with money, but I know the club has to survive."

Well I think Constantine hasn't got the bottle to join a Championship Club. He's a coward.

Looks like he's in the comfort zone with Vale.

A player should aim to play at the highest level he can.

See it at Sunday League level where a player will drop down 2 or 3 divisions just to look good playing with less able players. Trophy hunting we use to call it.

For as long as he can. Hence he'd rather wait 4 months and guarantee a full season of Championship football with some other club.

If a company offered you a new job with twice the money as you were already getting but could not gaurantee they could keep the business going would you move, or stay where you were nowing that the company you are with is not going bump.
He is not a coward, he is concerned about his future, after all can Barnsley give a cast iron gaurantee they will not go down?
He is like anyone else in any professsion he is doing the best that he sees fit.

    How depressing is that

It doesn't matter who it is really, but when its someone who's never even played at this level, to say that....

We attracted good players when we were a division lower, so it can only be down to the management and board as to why we couldn't sell the club to this bloke.
