I'm quite excited by the work being done to the town centre and can't wait for it to be finished.

I did say it was completely random.

Pity they haven't saved some of those millions for other areas....Goldthorpe needs it more than the town centre.

Goldthorpe needs a lot of the residents to grow up and act like decent human beings. The bricks and mortar of the place itself isn't what causes Goldthorpes problems, it is the behaviour of some of its residents.

Slightly unfair as 99% of goldthorpe folk are great people. Every village in Barnsley has its idiot and Goldthorpe is no different. I did a bit of voluntary work with the Goldthorpe Development Group and what a fantastic bunch of people they are, they won the community group of the year at the pride of barnsley awards. Only issue BMBC will have with spending on goldthorpe is that they won't see much of a return. A new town center will be profitable whereas there's not much you can give goldthorpe to give it a boost. I used to work on Goldthorpe market but I had to pack it in as it wasn't profitable at all. I almost bought a shop there to which now I'm so glad I decided against.

I agree the vast majority in most places are good deepcent people but it's the best ones who arent who are the problem. They drag the area down.

I know what you mean about the market too but sadly there just isn't a place for local markets like that anymore, not since transport became so easy. Goldthorpes high Street itself could be very good but money isn't needed to 'do it up' it's already good enough, what is needed is for a certain section of people there to get off their arses and get jobs and the area would then have more money to spend in their shops.

I appreciate that some people are struggling to find jobs in the current climate but a lot (small percentage still) or people in some areas are just lazy and don't even want work, they are the people dragging said areas down.

Anyway a new town centre will create jobs which can be staffed by local fook and in turn will help theur home villages by an increase in money there too

This. I actually wrote my undergraduate dissertation about the reasons Goldthorpe attempts at regeneration schemes weren't and won't be successful and arrived at roughly that conclusion.

Goldthorpe can stay as it is, as a town centre resident and having sold a property in Goldthorpe to buy it, good riddance. We now need to stop the borough voting labour to really move on. £50 million refurbishment on the town centre will be liking painting it, besides the library it could look cheap.

Who would you have the Borough vote for?

Anyone apart from Labour, take your pick. Everyone mowing about the state of the town and everyone keeps voting them in, crack on.

I disagree there. That ugly monstrosity, the old office block has come down, which is a much bigger improvement than a coat of paint. I think the car park built onto the market is coming down too, or I hope it is. Ditto the block that the Groggers Rest was in. Get rid of that and have a nice square there for some open space. The market is going to be tarted up too.

The Shambles Street area looks massively better as well with the new 6th form college and improvements round the Town Hall. The new Barnsley College at the top of Old Mill lane has transformed that area.

In a couple of years the town centre will be a massive improvement based on what it was like just a couple of years ago, from the end of Huddersfield Road down to May Day Green.

Now if they can just get rid of some of the local colour who hang around Peel Square.

The multi story is indeed coming down and a new second high Street is being built in its place which I think will be a massive improvement.

The parts that are being completely demolished will be fine, they should have never been allowed to put anything pebble dashed up in town. Let's see what the markets look like when they're done, they're refurbing the outside, I'm not holding my breath l think the plans look pretty cheap and the whole project is under £50 million, they've spent more on the college buildings which are very impressive.

Like the Tories who devasted and brought nothing in to nor cared about the communities they wrecked.?

Or the lib dems who sold their grandmothers for the first chance of a govt limousine.?

Or ukip who are just Tories wanting out of EU and would disguise themselves to any leaning to achieve it then dissolve onto the background?

Barnsley has needed to move on and develop for years - having seeing what development of the town/city centre has done for liverpool I hope Barnsley can reap similar benefits.
