Today Payne made a claim in the 13 minutes he was on the park to be considered for a starting place. Sam tried but is not as physical or pacy as Payne seems to be. This is a new season and on the display today Winnall needs to lift his game. Sam was shaking his head when he came off he looked frustrated, nothing came off for him today. I just hope he can lift himself to the level we all hope he can reach. To say Payne was playing for Dover last season he looks a real find. I cant wait to see who Hecky picks up front its not going to be easy to keep all his Strikers happy. l dont think Lee and Moncur came to be bench warmers. Watkins looked good today and it was good to see Josh pushed forward.
To be honest it was a performance I've seen from Winnall often and one of the reasons I think he could struggle at this level. Particularly when we're breaking forward Sam has a really bad habit of not being quick enough in his decision to release the ball or play the correct pass. He did this twice today in the first half and wasted great attacking positions. Due to the way we play losing the in this manner will be punished in the Championship. As it was at Wigan in the last game where Sam did a very similar thing. At the minute he's struggling to finish. That won't continue forever. Even at this level I feel he's capable of going on scoring runs. My fear is though the amount he wastes possession will eventually be found out and we'll be forced to revert to Moncur behind Bradshaw. That may not be a bad thing. Just bad for Sam. Based on his scoring record, we should just about get a 6 figure sum for Winnall in the January window. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Have to agree, sam has not done himself any favours in pre-season. Saying that he has had many games last season when he has played poorly and scored so don't think we should write him off just yet. Sent from my Kestrel using Tapatalk
A 7 figure offer is only realistic if he continues his scoring rate in the Championship. I don't envisage that but will be delighted to be proved wrong. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Winnall has not all of a sudden become a player creating debate in terms of his worth to the team. He is no better nor worse than he has always been. His contribution to the build up of team play has always been mediocre. His worth to the team has always been that essential final product. He is a good finisher who sometimes gets into a run when he becomes a great finisher. He is inconsistent - cos just when you want him chucked out of the team for stifling build up play, he goes and whacks it in the net for fun. And then does it again. Which is what the game is all about. He has a specific talent which most others don't have. Half the time. Why when he gets it he doesn't protect and lay it off quickly I do not know. Cos he can. I pick on him cos I know he can do the job. Seen it. But half the time won't do. He can still nail this league. There's a Hammill goal where he beats a million players at Oakwell before scoring. But Winnall's flick by the touchline to send him in was worth as much as Hammill's effort. I hope we start 442 with Winnall one of the two at Ipswich.
I don't doubt that we will and he's earned the right to that position for the first half dozen games at least. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Absolutely. Anyone who wants our top scorer dropping because he hasn't done much in pre-season wants their head testing. But like any other player he will need to adjust quickly to this level as we have some good options to take his place Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
New whipping boy ?Lots of negatives about Winnall on social media especially one comment in particular- he'll be found out this year. A player who scores 60 odd in 3 seasons albeit at a lower level doesn't just lose it overnight. People saying give Payne a chance at the same time - so he's come from non league but can do it but Winnall from league 1 can't. Think Sam will come good and think we have a midfield who will supply the chances
To be fair, the last 3 seasons are history. It's what he's capable of this season that's important. As it stands, you'd have to say that Payne has looked a lot sharper than Winnall. I'll judge him on his league performances though, not preseason Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Don't see what's wrong wi having so many quality strikers to choose from, such an amazing problem to have picking a front two every game.
We'll need every bit of cover we have (in every position) once injuries and suspensions start to bite. i don't think some of our fans have realised we can't just nip out in September, October and November and get someone else on loan this season. I hope there's several more defenders on the shopping list.
I love SSW, and want him to get a good run in the team with Bradshaw and I'm praying they click, as both are capable of getting close to, if not breaking 20 goals again this season. The issue is, every player, even Sam, should have to earn their shirt and if one player has looked off form in preseason, then his place in the starting line up should look insecure. I just hope Sam can use the competition for his place and the criticism to up his game.
With Sam declining to sign an extended contract we have to have an eye to the future, and that will inevitably include carefully taking stock of Sam's current form and future potential. We have to be looking at the options now if Sam could be out of the door in January or next May. That's not to denigrate what he's done for the club, but things move on. Cryne and Hecky will not be sentimental.
I said it at the time and still believe it. I think Sam might come to regret not signing an extension. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The team that starts the season will be far different to the team that finishes the season. Sam also needs to play very well because he could easily become 4th choice striker and next season playing in a league lower than us. The players know the clubs transfer policy as well as us and leaving for nothing is not part of the plan, if he thinks that is what's going to happen then he will need to score a lot of goals this year because we have big strong hungry players chasing him. No place for sentiment, it's football and BFC and the fans are the important ones
