Last week I thought our squad was a striker short maybe two I think now we definitely need to sign two forwards as a priority. If Sonko signs we have more than enough for defensive positions, and if we sign an attacking midfielder I think the squad is ready to go.Thoughts please.
I reckon any of the likes of these would be positive additions to our squad (finances permitting):- Defence-Sonko, Sh1ttu, McShane, Greer; Midfield-Bailey, Willamson, Cywka, Stock; Strikers-Kitson, Earnshaw, Murray, Fryatt. I know others will disagree, but these are only suggestions.
Unused sub? How does not playing a triallist in a friendly against a local rival (likely to give us a reasonable game) help us to assess whether or not he's worth signing? That just seems stupid, unless we've already decided about him.
Agree with all of those, and would add Hammill to the list of seemingly available midfielders, and perhaps also Chris Iwelumo, who I understand is surplus at his current club, unless he's already signed for someone else?
You go to watch them train quite a bit don't you? So surely you must have seen a number of players over the years that looked good in training then couldn't reproduce that performance on match days? When I was still playing in the local leagues (around two hundred years ago) it was the same - there'd be loads of lads that looked good in training that couldn't then 'do it' when it counted. It's pointless having triallists then not playing them in actual matches - particularly friendly games which are likely to be more competitive than most - unless a decision has already been made.
I think out of all those we could only realistically afford a few, Williamson, Stock would definitely strengthen the midfield although we do have a few centre mids, can't afford Kitson, Earnshaw or Fryatt and Brighton want to keep Greer. As good as a list of players it is, and I do want to see them playing for us, just can't see it happening unfortunately.
You're probably right, mate With regards to the affordability. But that's why I tried to cover myself by saying finances permitting.
Re: You're probably right, mate Of course we need to be so careful, but if ever there was a time to push the boat out slightly for a forward or a Hammill-type player this it. Could have the best defensive line-up in world football but if you don't score, the odd goal you concede will cost games. I reckon we'll get two Prem loans for midfield and forward positions.
Earnshaw is unlikely to feature for us this year, same as last. We've signed a Slovenian international centre forward, Etien Velikonja and Heidar Helgusson. Tommy Smith may be on his way as well - and a certain Mr Bellamy is supposedly coming any time soon. Earnie has said only this week that he may need to move on.
Provided we could afford his salary And any transfer fee (and assuming he'd want to swap Cardiff reserves for the Barnsley first team), Earnshaw would offer the pace we're sadly lacking up front Jeff. I think a Championship experienced striker like him would certainly help us no end.
It does seem a waste to leave a trialist on the bench unless like you say a decision has been made but even then I would have thought a run out at least would have been a good idea. But then again I'm not the manager.
Re: Provided we could afford his salary Think it's a year left on his contract so don't imagine it'd be too much of a transfer fee (also taking into account his age). When he signed for us, seem to remember that Forest were offering him £12k/wk so it'll be around that - or less given his age. I've got much man-love for the little fella, love him to bits. Not the best footballer around & has plenty of faults. Doesn't contribute that much (if at all!) to general team play, gives the ball away too easily etc - but he guarantees goals. Even as a bit-part player last year (certainly not suited to being the lone striker in the 4-5-1 formation we used all year), when he did come on he looked dangerous. Play him regularly & he'll be a 20+ goals per season striker no problem.
Re: Provided we could afford his salary do you think a short term loan move could be a possibility untill mido was fit with the possibility of a permanent move or to be in shop window
Re: Provided we could afford his salary Not sure tbh. He just wants to play regularly so it could be a possibility - but I think he's looking for something permanent,
