Strubers Comments on McGeehan Loan (Chronicle)

Cameron McGeehan has been loaned out to Barnsley’s fourth round FA Cup hosts Portsmouth for the rest of the season. The 24-year-old midfielder has played 68 games for the Reds since signing in 2017, scoring nine goals, and was a key player in last season’s promotion then captained the side in several games this season. But, under Struber, he has only made two substitute appearances and was left out of the last five matchday squads. Struber told the Chronicle: “He is a very good player. But, in my style, we need players with more activity against the ball and I think he must learn to work against the ball. “This is very important task for my style and other players in my squad are, in this part of the game, further ahead than McGeehan.”

McGeehan tweeted Barnsley with the message: “Thank you and good luck to everyone (apart from in the FA Cup).” Struber added: “For him, I think it is a good situation for getting gametime. He has been unlucky here to get no gametime. It’s a win, win. Maybe he could come back after the loan and play for us. We will see how it develops. We will watch him and then speak to him after the season.”

 

Understand what Struber is on abart but then I think of Bahre and am back to scratching mi heead.

 

In my time we've had quite a few players who've "worked against the ball".

 

I was thinking the same, i always thought of Mcgeehan and not being the most technically gifted but he will always graft for the team which (i thought) included doing the hard stuff when we don't have the ball.

 

I work harder to get the ball back than Bähre and I’m sat in row CC in the Ponty End!

 

It's politely saying he's crap but he wants to try and recoup some money off him. He isn't in his plans and that's why he's been shown the door, albeit on loan. If you were trying to sell a mate your car would you say it's £2000 but by the way it's ****?

 

Whole thing seems a little harsh. Can't be a bad laiker if he's scored goals at this level. Hopefully comes back a better player, I think we need the squad depth!

 

I think Struber is very focused on what his "boys" do without the ball as much as with the ball.Maybe Cameron can't play his style yet.I wouldn't right him off.

 

A bit more girth and good penetration.

 

Looked a bit lazy on a few goals when he was playing tbf - didn't track very well.

 

I like Struber but I think he has got this wrong and McGeehan will put the hard yards in to regain possession. Nevertheless he hasn't been playing and we need to strengthen elsewhere, though again not sure we needed another inexperienced 19 year old defender, no matter how good a footballer he is.

 

I don't rate McGeehan at this level. I think he falls short. If I'm understanding Struber correctly he's claiming McGeehan doesn't do enough when we don't have the ball. I disagree with that very strongly and would put that accusation against a number of players selected ahead of him. So, maybe I'm not understanding correctly.

I don't think Cam is good enough at this level but I have no problem with his professionalism and work rate.

Have you seen him play??..... We need better than mcgeehan even for squad players

 

I think Struber is simply trying to put his own concepts into how he wants the squad to think and play. Perhaps his command of our language restricts him a little in what he wants to publicly say with regards to this.
In the past, we've had a new manager come in and move out favourites in order to mould a new team. For example, within a few months of taking over, Mel Machin had moved on David Currie, Paul Futcher & Steve Cooper. Struber appears no different to me. He seems to be moving players out who played a big part in getting us promoted (I don't think McGeehan will be the last of these to leave), replacing them with individuals he feels will keep us in the Championship.
For what it's worth, I believe our new Head Coach has made a reasonable start to his career with us and have no issues with him wanting to bring in players he feels will be a good fit to his style.

I like the new Head Coach and it's so far so good. We're in a damn site better position than when he came. I'm all for him bringing his own guys in and moulding his own squad.

I'm impressed that now we don't need promotion form to stay up. A gentle win, lose, draw should suffice and just a subtle improvement on that will have us well clear of relegation.

I wasn't expecting anything against West Brom and Swansea so the defeat against Derby didn't bother me so much because we had two points more than I thought we'd get.

 

McGeehan has come back from the dead last season to be one of our better players, so its risky to write him off, but to his defenders this season? If you look at him in the highlights on the games he started, he's either wandering round aimlessly in the middle or making half hearted efforts to stop their attacks, and if he's not scoring goals, what was he contributing?

 

Pray tell what is a gentle win? Is it when the players score a few goals then cuddle the opponents so as not to humiliate them?
