When you click your fingers the clicking sound isn't actually made by your finger and thumb snapping against each other, it's made by your finger hitting your hand after it slides off your thumb.

Wrong. It is made by the build up and release of friction caused by the pressure of the finger and thumb. The energy is subsequently transmitted in sound, the snap is amplified and shaped by the hollow of the palm of your hand.

    Need help with anything else?

So who do we believe, Stephen Fry or Mr C? I think I may have to conduct an experiment to settle this.

If it's caused by friction between thumb and finger then i should be able to make the same sound between my left finger and right thumb, but i can't.

    I vote Fry

Did you have to put that up, it was just getting interesting? Edit it out, or I'm taking me ball in.

I'm afraid you're wrong Mr C. The sound is the result of your finger slapping on your hand (generally the base of the thumb). If it was simply a build up and release of friction, then one could produce the sound by rubbing your finger and thumb together and releasing them in an outward motion (think rolling a bogey at high speed straight into jazz hands) and you can't. The plam of ones hand does affect the amplification and tone of the 'click', but it's possible to produce a sound with the hollow of the palm filled, for example with the fingers of your other hand, leading to a convex shape, rather than a concave one. It's also possible to produce a similar sound by rapidly slapping a finger against ones palm, somewhat in the stylee of those new-fangled hip-hop types ones sees on tv.

Just because its on wikipedia doesn't mean it's correct. Try stopping the finger slapping on your hand. You lose the largest part of the clicking noise.

Good flexibility. Have you ever tried to give yourself a blowjob? You might be pleasantly surprised!
