Sunderland recall Michael Chopra

NEW Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia could be about to end Michael Chopra’s dreams of helping Cardiff into the top flight.

Following Sunderland’s 3-0 defeat at Everton on Sunday – which left them just two points off the relegation zone – Sbragia indicated that striker Chopra’s loan spell with the Ninian Park club was over.

Chopra’s 11-game loan spell ended with the 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle on Sunday that lifted Cardiff into fourth spot in the Championship table.

But Sbragia insists that he expects the striker back at the Stadium of Light this week.

Chopra’s loan spell officially ended yesterday, and he is due to join up with Sunderland’s first-team squad for training today.

Sbragia said: “Michael Chopra will come back and that gives us another body in the squad.”

After a lacklustre performance in Sbragia’s first official game as the Black Cats’ boss after signing an 18-month contract to replace Roy Keane on Saturday, the new manager was critical of his strikers Djibril Cisse and Kenwyne Jones, claiming they “did not have the spark up front”.

His attitude suggests he will resist any approach from Cardiff for an extension to Chopra’s loan.

Chopra would like the loan extended, saying: “I would love to stay and help Cardiff get promotion.

“I have spoken to the chairman (Peter Ridsdale) and manager (Dave Jones) over the last few days and told them I would love to stay at Cardiff.

“They have told me they will do all they can to make that happen.

“I have made my intention known and it is up to the two clubs now. I just hope something can be sorted out because I like the way Cardiff play and things are happening here.”

However, Sunderland’s relegation battle could mean that Sbragia would want Chopra in his own squad.

Sbragia will now be looking at the forthcoming transfer window as means of strengthening the Wearsiders’ playing resources.

He said: “We need a couple more players, we are short defensively and that was proved at Everton when we were without Anton Ferdinand, who was ill.

“We are down to about 18 senior players. We have enough to keep us up, but we do not have enough to go to the next level. We are looking at the transfer window now. We have identified one player that we want, and we will be considering bringing in loan players.”
