Is that your view for all crime prevention methods?

How about curfews? Electronic tags on us all? Electronic chips inserted in our brains to render us helpless at the push of a button?

That might sound extreme, but it'll come if people keep using the piss poor argument "well, if it helps to prevent crime" as our freedom is continually eroded. You may think the government is benign now, but it may not be in the future and their powers to reduce our freedom will not be curtailed. One they've got them they've got them forever.

    Yours, Acky

    RE: "When listening in."

OK maybe I am one step too far ahead on the listening in bit

THe current plan is only to keep a record of all your calls made and received and the date time and length of each call.

Not hard to see the next step being "monitoring selected calls in the interests of national security " though is it

    The terrorists are winning

The freedoms we hold dear are being eroded by our own Govt. Not to combat terrorism, but because of their perverse need to monitor and record.

    I agree in some respects

But I have always thought that PAYG mobile phone's should be registered because it is far too easy to use them to harass people or commit other crimes and they are virtually unidentifiable.

The Labour government is littered with failed ex-Communists. They might have changed their economic policy in order to become a viable election proposition, but their authoritarian control agenda has not changed one iota.
