Poor team shape, substitutions and tactics lost us the game last night. Why didn’t he bring on McCart for Cadden and defend for last 20 minutes with a solid back five?
Poor referee decision cost us,not the tactics. We may have been under the cosh, but we'd got the result if not for a comical penalty. Sign of a good team grinding out results despite playing poor.
Had blaming refs the pen was abit soft watching it back but I've seen them given. The pen was saved Roberts did his job the rest of the team were napping while the Bolton player scored. They had umpteen chances that 2nd half after we went 2 up and ultra defensive.
I would argue both coaches did well with tactics. First half we played a very high line and pressed the hell out of them quickly....anyone questioning McAtee for Cozzy, could see how important he was last night. So Collins had done his homework, trying to get the ball forward as early as possible too. Second half Bolton quickened up their passing and found a few more holes, we obviously tired and just simply don't have the back up on the bench to replace the players who came off. Good game to watch, gutted to concede so late but christ Roberts was amazing and we endured a horrible last 20. Second
Not saying we're ****. Obviously the table doesn't lie were a good side but that 2nd half was one of the worst this season.
IMHO. Once McAtee tired we lost the press (about 10 into 2nd half). Collins their 28 was beginning to run Cadden ragged hence the change. I personally would have taken both Cole and McAtee off and replaced with Cosgrove and Grant thus providing a different approach to the press and give Bolton something else to consider. Currently we don't have a straight swap for McAtee so we need to restructure the attack as a whole. I do hope Connell can regain his old self then he too can dominate midfield like Sheehan (8) did last night.
When teams play like Bolton did last night, that formation kills us. Everything they did was through the channel between the CB and the WB, mostly on the left side. Changing to 4-4-2 stops that option immediately - I don’t know why we didn’t do it last night. It’s really frustrating.
Tactics have to have the players playing to their strengths and for those players to not hit the panic button. It is not always in the managers hands. It's the players very often. We have seen a very different Barnsley. 2nd half on occasion this season and opposition players go into panic mode. (Hoof ball when unnecessary and losing control of the ball. Hence constant pressure. ( It's why players often go down for bugger all, and not get trainer to come on to relieve a bit of pressure and reorganise)
i agree -how many thow ins was won by our forwards MacAtee afer 65 mins for Cosgrave -we needed an outlet
