Wife's a black belt and was British Junior champ, loved it, can't speak highly enough about the work ethic and discipline it instills in kids.

I went for about a year, got a few gradings in, great for confidence. Would get padded up and give a punch/kick take a punch/kick. It's the best thing for you, make you believe that you can stand up for yourself properly and that's half the battle (you don't look like a victim). In reality you have to be ready to scrap if you have to and taekwondo will get you there as much as anything else.

Practically speaking though, grappling and ground fighting techniques are usually better for self defence because restrains are better in law and most fights end up on the floor anyway. Something like Ju-Jitsu can be good. Also better in older age when you can't get your kicks over your head any more!

Still - loved the taekwondo when I was doing it. Moved away a couple of hundred miles and didn't keep it up - shame.
