In a sequel to the suspension of betting by UK bookies on a UK league match at the weekend, the UK Football Association has confirmed it has mounted a full investigation.

The Guardian newspaper reports that the enquiry will look into suspicious betting patterns at the lower league match after large amounts of money were staked on an outcome at odds of 22-1.

The FA was called in by bookmakers William Hill plc and Blue Square in the Rank plc group after the weekend Blue Square Premier match between Grays Athletic and Forest Green Rovers.

The two bookies suspended betting the day before the game after a large number of bets – including three-figure sums – were placed on Grays to win after trailing at half-time. The match ended 2-1 to Grays, who were losing 1-0 at the break.

Grays has issued statement offering full support to any investigation, and emphasising: "Grays Athletic Football Club do not condone any form of corruption and there is certainly no room for this in football."
