Saying that I used to walk round Rockley and Stainborough years ago.
The caravan park, Greensprings, had a footpath through it leading up to the right where there are some woods and a stile on the right.
I remember in those woods there was a kind of stone tunnel that you could walk in, it extended about a hundred yards through and under the trees. I never knew what it was. A very strange thing to find in woods !
Anybody on here any idea what this might be, and is it still there?
I presume it was part of the estate.
After all these years my memory of it is a bit vague but it still fascinates me to wonder what it is/was.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why this is an archaeological problem?

    Faint praise!:D
Really, all that's required is local research in one or two libraries. Perhaps, at a push, getting help & advice from an archivist.

Could this have some connection? Halfway down the page "Word of a tunnel."

I don't know what the tunnel is but it is still there with a grill over the entrance. I stumbled upon it last summer.

Rockley tunnel is a conservation area, has one of the largest Bat colonies in Yorkshire including Long eared, Daubenton & Natter bats.

Am i thinking of the right one? It's in the woods immediately to the side of the caravan site and runs in the general direction of East to West rather than north south

Couldn't say about direction but the rest sounds about right.
If it is then what was it built for? I'd imagine it is very old but wouldn't have been built for bats!

Is it roughly in the area I've circled? If it is then from what I can work out it was part of the old rockley tramway

    Yes indeed. Great stuff.
But what was the Rockley tramway and why a tunnel?

I THINK it was a form of railway (tram) line to get materials to and from the rockley mine and if my memory is right regarding exactly where it was and which way it was pointing it is possible that it COULD be in a direct line from the engine house but I could be wrong with that. I could be wrong with it all to be fair

It's likely to be part of a tram way from Pilley Hills Colliery to Worsbrough Basin. Check out the 1855 maps here. https://maps.nls.uk/view/102345169 I have just checked against the location. It does look to be part of a railway to Silkstone Main Colliery not the Pilley Hills one.

Well that’s me off for a dusk visit next time I’m over. I’ve been watching the Pips across the way coming out on the warmer evenings (still a rarity). Thanks for chipping this over.

There is something in there around that area. There's a gap above the grill and I climbed in about 10 year or so ago. It arcs round and didn't seem to go very far or anywhere. Can vaguely remember a pile of rubble floor to ceiling as if there had been a collapse. Part of the brick roof is missing and lets daylight in where there's little soil above. Thought I remember reading at the time that it had had been a store for food and drink before fridges, but could be imagining it. Wouldn't advise trying to get in on your own as you might struggle to get back out.
