... and it's just an idea at this stage, but here goes.... Some of you may know, I work for a charity which promotes sports for people with disabilities. So, this summer, I'll be sitting watching some of the athletes at the Paralympics, who started out at events we offered. We offer grass roots opportunities for people in various sports, with exit routes for those competitors who show talent. Anyway, to cut a long story short, in spite of the Olympics & Paralympic, and promises of legacy etc etc, we are really stuggling financially. Staff cut down from 9 to 3, budgets slashed etc etc. We have to do more and more fundraising, as our funding from Sport England will ultimately stop. So, the idea is this ..... involving two key areas in our region, Barnsley & Huddersfield.... For the game on the last day of the season, our organisation, will co-ordinate a sponsored walk from Barnsley to Huddersfield. We would hope to involve as many fans who wish to take part, including those from Huddersfield (who apparently already have something similar up and running for the last day of the season). The walk will take in arranged "pit stops" (pubs), plus hopefully, if I can arrange it a place to get changed/ cleaned up at the Galpharm. Hopefully it will be a fun event, and a good opportunity to meet people, have a walk, a social, and raise some much needed cash for disability sport in the region. Obviously I would be asking for people to collect sponsorships in aid of our organisation, but am also realistic enough to understand that some may also wish to walk for their own selected charities. If there is a general feeling of support for this idea, I will make further enquiries as to route, pit stops, facilities for changing etc. Meantime, should anyone have any good suggestions, offers of support (we may need back up cars, etc), send me a PM, and I'll take it from there. (By the way, walkers would have to arrange their own travel home!) In return for the support pledged, my organisation (The Federation of Disability Sports) will pledge to use any cash raised to the benefit of Disabled people in Barnsley and Huddersfield. There's obviously plenty of time to get this up and running, but I wanted to get people's thoughts and an idea of how many people might wish to give the walk a go..... it's about 15 miles I think!
