Is nothing sacred? Tate and Lyle are getting rid of the dead lion from their tins of Golden Syrup. Golden Syrup was a must on porridge when I was a child.
I'm not sure because I haven't got a tin, but I think Tate and Lyles have recently even got rid of Tate!
No doubt they've paid a firm of consultants a fortune to "re-energise the brand"..... probably the same consultants who recommended changing The Royal Mail to Consignia a few years ago.
IBM launched a new brand of Server about 1997 and used the famous marketeer (I forget his name) who had worked wonders for BMW due to his unprecedented marketing genius of getting 3 series, 5 series and 7 series into the public consciousness. IBM paid him a small fortune to market their new range of sexy black Netfinity servers, and the guy duly came up with 3 series, 5 series and 7 series. Nice work if you can get it.
A word to the wise for our younger brethren, if like treacle sandwiches (or any other really) for your snap at work,,,,, never tell your Mam!
Golden syrup was always just branded as Lyle’s. I’ve got an old tin somewhere with screw and nails etc in my grandad kept from the fifties or sixties, just says Lyle’s Golden Syrup on it. Abram Lyle and son. Does say 1lb rather than 454g though…
Kids can still have it on their porridge, they just don’t have to look at a dead lion covered in flies whilst eating it.
The dead lion is actually being swarmed by bees, not flies. It eludes to an Old Testament story. Bees making honey in a lion carcass; out of the strength came sweetness. Mr Lyle was a devout Christian by all accounts. It does seem a bit dated to have a dead lion on a treacle tin for that reason though so I don’t see it as an issue they’ve chosen to change it. The new logo still features a lion and a bee.
