    Teacher takes children to pub
CHILDREN as young as 15 from a South Yorkshire school were allowed to drink beer in a pub on a Duke of Edinburgh Award trip supervised by their teacher.

Today one angry mum called for the teacher to be suspended from Abbeydale Grange School in Millhouses, Sheffield.
Teacher Patrick Callingham took a group of Year 11 pupils, aged 15 and 16, on an expedition to North Derbyshire as part of their Silver Award.
During the trip the youngsters, their teacher, and two expedition assessors visited a pub, where it is claimed four of the five pupils drank beer.
Sharon Marsden, aged 38, whose daughter drank only soft drinks, said she felt "let down" by Mr Callingham.
"We trusted him with the care of our children on this trip yet he took them to a pub and condoned them drinking alcohol – it is a disgrace," she said.
"They are only children – anything could have happened if they had got drunk.
"It is disgraceful that a teacher allowed children to drink alcohol under his nose – he should be ashamed of himself and should be banned from going on any more of these trips."
Mr Callingham, of Crookesmoor, Sheffield, who helps with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in his own time, said the situation had been "blown out of proportion".
He claimed the landlord had provided the children with "their first drink as a gift" and said: "If they had more drinks after that I am unaware of it."
He added: "Does the parent who complained know they were drinking Matins – it's only 3.2 per cent.
"I believe that introducing young people to responsible drinking, rather than seeing them drinking tonnes of White Lightning or alcopops, is more sensible than allowing them to get into a situation in pubs or clubs where they are out of control."
Mrs Marsden is considering reporting the matter to the police.
Ms Bull said in a letter she had spoken to Mr Callingham "at length", adding: "I have said it is alright to go into a pub with the landlord's permission but soft drinks only must be consumed by all involved from school. This includes all staff and students."
She said disciplinary proceedings had begun.
David Marcher, Duke of Edinburgh scheme director for Sheffield, said it was a matter for the school but his association "does not condone under-age drinking".
