By naming it such, instead of Team UK, we have excluded Northern Ireland. Nothing to do with this stupid 'Britishness' promoted by Gordon Brown is it?
Agree that the naming is misleading, but it's always been Great Britain in the Olympics. Apparently the likes of the Falkland Isles, the Pitcairns and other overseas dependencies also compete under the 'Great Britain' banner too, so the naming could get a bit complicated if it was taken to the nth degree.
I know what you're saying but don't some of the folk of Northern Ireland want to be British? The others couldn't care less.
I think the official name is Team Great Britain & Northern Ireland. TV shortens it down but I know what you mean, why are we not competing as Team UK? Probably because of the other 'provinces' that are competing in our team that are not part of the UK.
Found that we don't compete as the UK because the UK includes oversea territories such as Bermuda & British Virgin Isles who compete as a team of their own rights. Hence why it's Team GB & NI.
i THINK ireland competes as a whole in the olympics as does the rugby team but individuals from there can compete as team gb if they so wish. thats my understanding anyway, so i could be wrong.
I thought a lad from Northern Ireland Won a bronze medal for Team GB in one of the rowing disciplines? Could be wrong.
Re: I thought a lad from Northern Ireland sorry mate i pressed the finish button before i'd finished so had to edit hence the added bit b4 your reply.
Re: Be careful, mate irony is i had such delicate little fingers just right for typing whilst working in the mines. and now i do typing quite regular my fingers are more adept to mining.
