    In the main

    a big bag of dross.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the most promising prospect from the academy at the moment, maybe ever, is Scott Flinders, and we have a good coach in John Lukic...the rest...Mick Tarmey? kin hell

Is it just me or are the majority of the academy lads all local? Surely the point of the academy was to attract youngsters from all around the country and therefore stand a better chance of finding a gem.
It appears that the only difference between the current academy and the old youth set up are the facilities. I can't argue with the quality of the set up at the moment but good pitches don't create better players.
I remember reading something about clubs not being allowed to take on players from outside of their district. Is this still the case?

    Apples and oranges?

I'm comparing players that have come up through our juniors. Like for like, you berk. I know the first side is over a longer time period, but the point I was making is that they're all quality players, where as it would be hard to argue that anymore than a couple of the post academy team are. We were producing loads of players of a similar standard to what we're producing now during the 80s and 90s(Carl Airey, Gary Coatsworth, Ian Chandler, Sean Dunphy, Chris hedworth, Wayne Goodison) and even some better ones who haven't made the list (Glyn Hurst, Luke Beckett) but, with maybe one or two exceptions, the academy hasn't produced anything like what we used to get from the youth team. It's been going about 8 years now. Judging from how many good players we brought through in the 80s and early to mid 90s you would expect us to have produced half a dozen quality players. More if the academy is supposed to be better than the old set-up. If it isn't any better then why did we spend all that money on it?

    70s Chambers, McCarthy, Barrowclough, Speedie
    Early 80s Banks, Joyce, Campbell
Mid - Late 80s Hirst, Cross, Rhodes, Agnew
    Early 90s Tiler, Eaden, Liddle
Mid 90s Jones, Moses, Watson, Morgan

Yes, they can't travel from more than an hour away or something.

    You're right Jay

Look at the transfer fees brought in by Barrowclough, Banks, Hirst, Liddle, Tiler, McCarthy, Agnew etc all those years ago. How much have we had from the Academy this past few years? Fallon free, Parkin free, Mulligan free - and they were the better players.

Fallon, Parkin and Mulligan seem to be getting themselves back up the leagues. Perhaps a bit of time & patience at oakwell would have reaped better rewards.

I notice Dale Tonge has taken some stick on here recently. Good old Barnsley fans, salt of the earth. witcockart.
