Sorry to bother you guys and gals but I'm on my 10th hour of trying to sort this problem out:

With some sites (www.woolworths.co.uk for one - don't ask why) I get "The page cannot be displayed" error message. Other sites are ok. I've tried the things that were obvious to me - another browser, system restore, running Spybot/Ad-Aware - but have had no success.

Any help greatly appreciated. I'm feeling about as down with this as I did when Colgan dropped his clanger at Cardiff.

    have you got a router?

or just a modem? If so switch everything off for at least 30 desconds and power it all back up. Could be a DNS cache issue.

then if still probs open up a command window (start|run|cmd)
    and type nslookup
    then type www.woolworths.co.uk

it should resolve your dns to 195.188.18.40 at the mo. If not then check you are using the correct DNS server.

if ive lost you then sorry. Let me know how far you get.

RE: have you got a router?

I think I'm with you! I've got a Wanadoo livebox, which I think is a router?

When I do nslookup and then www.woolworths.co.uk I get the message:

    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds
    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds
    *** Request to WANADOO-XXXX timed-out

    1. open up your internet page,
    2. click on tools,
    3. click on internet options,
    4. click on delete files and put a tick in the box that says delete all offline content, click ok, (can take a while)
    5. click delete cookies, click ok,
    6. go to 'privacy' tab, make sure the slider is on medium or low, click apply,
    7. go to 'security' tab, out of the 4 big icons at the top 'internet' should be selected, under security level for this zone if it says anything other than medium, click default level, click apply,
    8. go to 'advanced' tab, click restore defaults, click apply, click ok.

if this doesn't work, disable all of your firewalls etc so you have no form of internet security on at all.

if this doesn't work try un/reinstalling your modem/router.

if this doesn't work there is a possible line fault and you will need to contact your ISP.

if it is only certain web pages that you cannot get onto, you are better off calling microsoft on 0800 60 10 100 as it may be a setting on your computer that is stopping you from viewing some sites.

if it is a wanadoo/orange livebox, call 0870 010 2462 and select technical support option.

if it is a wanadoo/orange modem, call 090 5050 5151 for technical support.

if you get lost or anyhing let me know.

looks like you have got a DNS problem

To reboot the router just unplug everything and put it back on again.

    once done:

go to a command window again and type ipconfig /all

    (Assuming you are on wannadoo)
the DNS servers in the output from that command for wanadoo should be
    195.92.195.94
    195.92.195.95

If they aint set to this they are pointing at the wrong uns - hence your problems.
    Let me no.

RE: looks like you have got a DNS problem

I'm not getting those numbers. Under the Ethernet Wireless Network Connection I get

    IP Address: 192.168.1.114
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1

Are these where the numbers should be?

your behind a router deffo then. Put 192.168.1.1 into a browser and it will take you to router admin page - check the DNS settings against the ones i gave you. If there is an option to cache dns switch it off - if there is an option to flush the cache do it.

You did reboot the router yes? This clears most things like this.

    Confused

With 192.168.1.1 I get to the Livebox Homepage. But then I'm not sure which DNS settings to check.

I unplugged the router and then plugged it in again. Enough for a reboot?

    if it is a wanadoo livebox go to;
    start
    programs
    wanadoo
    inventel
    uninstall your livebox

click select all in window that comes up then click execute.

follow prompts and restart your computer. it will then be uninstalled.

when your computer has restarted put in your installation (easy set-up) CD and follow through installation.
    (always do full installation)

    if it is an orange livebox go to;
    start
    programs
    orange
    uninstall your livebox

click select all in window that comes up then click execute.

follow prompts and restart your computer. it will then be uninstalled.

when your computer has restarted put in your installation (easy set-up) CD and follow through installation.
    (always do full installation)

if you have any problems with installation call orange wireless and talk technical support on 0870 010 2462

if your problem still isn't solved call microsoft on 0870 601 0100.

if it is a speedtouch modem put your installation disc in and select uninstall software, when it is all uninstalled put your disc back in and install it again.

any problems with installation, call orange broadband technical support on 090 5050 5151.

microsoft number again if this doesn't resolve your problem is 0870 60 10 100.

Well just because they have a modem doesn't mean they have to ring the 090 number! BB Starter tech support!

    RE: Samantha

they know more on the 090 number about modem than people on wireless and talk tech so he would be better off.

    For info only

I tried the 090 number 3 times yesterday but gave up after holding for 10 minutes each time.

(No complaint intended and I have had 2/3 of a bottle of Rioja already tonight)
