I recently set a home network using a NETGEAR DG834GT modem router. The main PC is connected via an ethernet cable and the laptop via a built in wireless card.

The Internet connection is working fine for both PC's but I am unable to share files across the network. I can only see the shared folders that have been set on for each machine when I am at that machine. I can successfully ping each machine from the other and when I look at view workgroup computers can see both machines.

When I try to access one machine from the other using view workgroup computers I get a pop up message that reads: -

\\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

I have read home networking for dummies, the information that cane with the router and Microsoft help but cannot seem to enable this feature. I would be grateful for an advice.

    Regards

Make sure that any Internet Security software is not blocking the connections, by default most of them block all attempted access unless they are on your "Approved List"

Turn off the firewalls on the PC's

You should have a built in firewall on the netgear router - but if you have software firewalls on the PC's they are probably blocking access to each other. You can safely turn these off if behind the netgear firewall - (may need to remember to turn the laptops back on if you take it elsewhere)</p>
