got a file of around 30mb that i want to upload to the internet for downloads. its up but i want a .zip version or something so its smaller and doesn't take up as much bandwidth. when i use winrar it doesn't even make the file smaller at all, just "archives" it or summat. am i doing something wrong? which programme should i use? cheers for any help
chances are then that the file format is already compressed - i.e jpg or mpg. Zipping it up wont do much to compact it any more. The mulitple file archive makes it easier to upload and post to newsgroups etc....
Yes MP3 is a compressed format The fact thats its already compressed means programs like winzip and winrar cant compress it any further. If you take for example a 4 meg .wav file and convert it to mp3 it reduces to around 750k (in the random example of one I did at the weekend) so there is nothing left to compress
well there are things you can do you can convert it to a lower quality mp3 which will be smaller (but sound worse)
3 meg per song sounds about right only choices are split out the songs or change the mp3 encoding to lower quality. you need software to do that though
