I've had my computer 18 months now but I've only just tried playing a DVD in it. The pictures are fine, but there's no sound. Sound works fine for playing CDs and everything else. Any advice welcome.
A friend had the same problem once There is a mute setting on your DVD player that is set - you need to find it and turn it off Stupid default setting - its a long time ago so I cant remember exactly where it is
What software are you using to play your DVDs?
Look for the mute button (loudspeaker sign) and try switching it.

Mute button There's also something dodgy about the mute button. Try this: go into 'Control Panel', 'Sounds and Audio Devices', then.... you're gonna kick yourself for this one: Click to check 'Mute', then 'Apply', then uncheck 'Mute', then 'Apply' It's important to do both steps of mute->apply mute and then unmute->apply Hope that helps
My colleague had this problem She got video but no sound in MS Media player, but got when she tried WinDVD.
Could be a CODEC issue ? i.e. your PC does not have the right sound filters installed to play the DVD properly, your DVD is providing sound in a digital format that your PC does not understand at the moment. I always use K-Lite codec pack from :
http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm
This will ensure that your PC can play all kinds of media formats/sounds etc

Have you tried loading new codecs? I seem to remember a similar problem when I got this PC which didn't have the latest codecs. I got sound and no vision for some file formats so slightly different but might be worth a try. Have you tried different file formats and is it the same problem for all of them?
