Can anyone tell me how much space should be kept free on a hard drive to keep it working properly.

I tried to defrag the other night but had less than 15% free space. I deleted a few progs and now have 22% free space and have defraged.

    Thank you.

Windows (at least Windows XP) will warn you when you're running out of disk space, so you don't need to worry about it too much.

As long as you have more than 1Gb free disk space you should be alright, but like you already mentioned, you will need 15% free disk space when you want to defragment your hard drive.

    Kev, I don't know.....

but it doesn't sound like you have much space lest. I'd be interested to see if anyone recommends one of those plug-in drive jobbies. I'm thinking about getting one myself.

Can't see any problem my work computer has been almost at maximum for a while, but keeps on working. Get a exterior Hard Drive and dump your rubbish on it (Photos etc etc) and release more space for programs, they are cheap enough at the moment. You can buy a 5Gig USB memory stick for under £25.

    8.4G free space left.

I've been thinking about one of those external bits of kit.

Hope it's bloody wet and cold where you are Al :D

    Deffo

I have 2 x 500gb USB hard drives to keep all the movies, MP3s, photos etc on - much better than keeping it on the hard drive and keeps it working faster.

Click on Computer and on the Icon for one or more of the drives will tell you the free and used space on either.

Before an external I'd put another internal in first.

As a slave then put all your documents. pictures etc on to that . even if you loose windows and have to do a reinsatl that would only mean formatting the C drive so nothing would be lost. External drives are way slower in transfer than internal.

I would also follow that advice, but add a USB one as an additional backup! :D
