I thought they were meant to be deterants, not sneakily placed traps to catch you out. No I wasn't speeding, before you ask. It was a small mobile camera on a tripod about 2ft off the ground. All painted black. The van where it was being monitored from was about 50ft away up a side street almost out of view from the road it was monitoring. It will of caught hundreds of motorists simply because they couldn't see the thing. At very least they are supposed to be highly visible, i.e. painted yellow. Its all a means to raise revenue. Nothing to do with slowing down traffic.
The idea is to stop people speeding all the time, not just where they know there is a camera. Speeding will only be reduced when there are hidden cameras all over and we don't know where they are so you just have to stick to the limits at all times.
no the idea is to place cameras in sneaky locations where little danger exists in order to generate revenue.
safety cameras my arse.
for example
Didnt I read somewhere that on roadworks where cameras were placed the frequency of accidients is greater than when no cameras were present?

RE: no The speed camera's in todays modern car many with abs can stop instant at 40 mph rather than 30. It amazes me that many people being fined the average in a 30 mph zone is 36?????????wonder why?
RE: no Because people break suddenly on realising a camera is there. That is the problem with the current system. If you knew that there could be a camera anywhere, but didn't have any idea where, then the tendency would be more likely that you would stick to the speed limit at all times. Perhaps also all speed limit signs should be the electronic ones that flash on as you approach, that way it catches your eye easily so you know the speed limit. I am not arguing against that it appears more to be about revenue raising at the moment.....what I am advocating is a change that forces people into sticking to speed limits at all times. And I admit I am as guilty as anyone at driving over the limit in areas I know because I know there isn't a camera there.
RE: no I agree that speed cameras should be outside Schools,Playgrounds,Parks and accident black spots. What about the camera's at monk bretton the bit of dual carriage way, when you go on towards monk bretton there have been accidents on the bend no camera there?and the one near the suba seal place a camera, but less than 100 yards away from a set of traffic lights. I think that most geniune motorists would welcome speed camera if they were based on 1)location's 2)not to have them money willy nilly
If you did get caught a few simply rules are that on appeal there must be visable road signs saying speed cameras and that the speed camera must be visable
RE: no I think that if people are caught by this particular example, there are huge grounds for appeal. However, most people will just pay up and take the points for an easy life.
Burnt out speed cameras quite a few in Barnlsey. Always makes me smile. Maybe if they all got torched on a regular basis the cops would cut their losses and give up on them
I bet there,s a camera sign We get the temp black camera on a tripod opposite the Jet garage in Poggy but there are permanent camera signs on the lamp posts. Also if you had been stuck on the M1 this morning for an hour due to an accident it makes you think about the speed , I was about300 yds away, whats that in seconds at 80 , very lucky I wert in it I recon..
