At this moment in time I would bring Bobby in to right back, shove Scowen into midfield Disco and Howrd to come off the Bench. I've done it the other way around.

I don't think any of the 2006 side would get near today's except Hassell, Howard and Devaney. However, in my opinion the standard in League 1 is overall much better now. Also, all of the 2006 team belonged to us, which makes a big difference for me. I'd have most of the 2006 side in my squad, good, honest players, and some not short of skill, either. I guess what we need to look at is which of them managed to make the successful step up to Championship level. Hassell Kay Devaney Howard McPhail (though not with us) Nardiello As for who could do it in the league above out of the present team - apart from Hammill, it's a complete unknown.
Nick Colgan Bobby Hassell Mawson IPO Paul Reid Antony Kay Paul Heckingbottom Martin Devaney Brian Howard Stephen McPhail Adam Hammill IPO Paul Hayes Marc Richards Daniel Nardiello I dissagree with a few of you, in that 2006 squad was stronger than todays. Colgan, Mcphail, Nardiello all full internationals. All had injury niggles but if fit must be in there. Richards for his workrate and team play. Devaneys creativity. Kay and Hecky both local lads with character, maturity, experience and quality. What you notice is lots of leaders in the 2006 side, at a glance i'd say at least 8 of the 11 were or have captained sides.
I'd agree wth that John. It's easy to look at the past with rose tinted glasses. Football has moved on. It does show the strength of our midfield in 2006 ( which got us promoted IMO) that despite the qualities of Hourihane and Scowen neither would get in the side despite their qualities.
For the team that got promotion in Cardiff it was the start of 8 years of struggle in the higher division. Managers came and went as they struggled unsuccessfully to establish the club in the higher division when the problem was not the manager, it was the size of the budget that they were expected to improve the squad with. In the end, our relegation came as a merciful release. Surely, the next time we are promoted, it should not be under the same circumstances, because I fear the same inevitable outcome if it is. Most contributors to this thread seem to think that the side that won in Cardiff was slightly better than the current one. I would agree with that, and especially with the comments about the two central midfield players.
There's really not that much to choose between the sides until you get to the strikers. In my opinion, our defenders and 'keeper now are head and shoulders above the 2006 back line in terms of quality, with the exceptional of Hassell - yet as far as I remember in 2005/06 we kept a record number of clean sheets. Both midfields ooze with class. Imagine how exciting it would be to watch us with Hammill on one wing and Devaney on the other. Up front - I think we're better now. Hayes and Richards never really quite made the step up. Having said that, I'm not sure Winnall could due to his lack of pace. Fletcher certainly could, but he's not our player. Nardiello for me was still more talented than any of them though - imagine if he had Richards' or Winnall's application.
What a load of bo****cks Yeah sure we struggled but what the f,**** do you expect with the budgets half the championship clubs command ? Seems some on here are happy to see us the kings of the third tier . We've had some absolutely fantastic achievements in those ten years ,a lot more than some bigger clubs with bigger budgets. The arrogance of some of our fans is bordering on dee dar imo
I'd take us going up this season and having another '8 years of struggle' in the Championship any day.
