Cannot see one piece of footage on there that would have even made it onto the Neil Redfearn film BRF made. Gets ready.
Agreed. Not saying anything about Glavin as he is so many reds fans heroe and i cant remember anything about him as i was only akid back thenBUT if i had a choice of who i would want in my team, Redfearn would win hands down every time.
To be fair Given the relative lack of TV coverage in the Glavin era, it would have been hard to put together a video showing as much good stuff as the Redfearn one did, there can't be all that much footage of Glavin available. I assume that's why a lot of the Glavin video showed a lot of near misses, hitting the post etc cos there aren't many clips of his goals available.
apart from winning a defensive header and then running the length of the field to finish well. Lack of TV coverage precludes a fair demonstration of his ability.
The camera's only came to Oakwell maybe 3 times a year then though... However, I was lucky enough to see most of Ronnie's home games as I did with Redfearn and in my opinion Ronnie was head and shoulders above anyone else, not only Redfearn... He had the lot, Just look at his goals per game ratio..... from Central Midfield too
I tend to agree But you must also remember that Glavin's best days came in the old third division and the quality of opposition was not so great. Later, the magic was still there, but I wonder what happened to his goals per game stats. Plus he was that bit older.
Talked to BRF yesterday about that. There are a number of players (not many) that Barnsley had at their peak, Higgy, Redfearn, Aylott, Parker, Banksie, and Glavin was one of them. It's a pity that there isn't more footage to support the memory, because younger fans never saw him and can't remember him. Glavin sits in my memory as the best player I have ever seen in a Barnsley shirt. That is not to take anything away from Redfearn and Higgy they were great, and I wish we had their like with us now. Glavin occupies the space in my memory that Higgy and/or Redfearn will for younger fans in the future when they remember the good times. It's the space which Johnny Kelly held for my dad. That's what's great about being loyal to a football club, and how that loyalty transcends generations. I am proud when I think about all these players and I confidently expect to see others in the future (God, Gordon Shepherd and Patrick Cryne willing). The experience of a great player is in the moment and in the memory. Thanks to BRF and other contributors for letting us re-live the moment.
Redfearn was class, Ronnie was classier.................. having watched both players, Ronnie Glavin was 10 times the player Redfearn was.
the roar when Ronnie picked the ball up and started running with it just got louder and louder go on go on go on sheer class.
Absolutely correct .... ... prior to these videos, how long has it been since most of us saw any footage of Ronnie Galvin ?
The man was pure class, the extent of which I had almost forgotten before seeing those clips
