We, the Barnsley tax payers fund this festival to promote the local music scene and it's become a tool for the organisers (GAIA) to help their band. It makes my blood boil that some of us have put our hearts and souls into making the local music scene what it is today and this lot (BOM) are taking the piss. BOM stands for Barnsley Original Music by the way, the main stage this year has only one Barnsley band on, and guess which band it is........the organisers band GAIA.

THIS IS WHAT THE X-RIPPERS HAVE SAID TO THE OTHER BANDS

    greeting fellow barnsley bands

just to let you know we have pulled out of the bomfest - this is no disrespect to the people of barnsley, the bands of barnsley or glen sutton (stage (tent) 2 manager) but we do not agree with the policy of all the barnsley bands (BUT one)playing in a tent. yes a tent for the barnsley bands at a "Barnsley" festival.

the main stage is filled with bands, even we have not heard of, never-mind the punters. the organisers "gaia" have secured a nice slot on the main stage and claim they are the only barnsley band good enough to play the main stage - see seventh son - if anyone is a main stage band these lads are.

we also believe that if we played the festival that the organisers/public would take this as an ok that we agree barnsley bands do not need to be on the main stage. what does the "B" stand for in bomfest anyway ?? we believe and support the local music scene, this is why we have taken this action.

we also believe that in time bomfest will distance itself from barnsley and eventually become a totally commercial venture and forget the purpose it was started for - to promote "barnsley bands".

why do senser and tom hingley play nearly every year?

    anyway good luck

seems fair enough ! i actually love senser and tom hingley so im not complaining , seems that with over 10 bands on each stage at least 5 could be from barnsley, seventh son aren't my cup of tea but im sure they are actually quite good at what they do!

If they want to actually get enough punters through the door to make it work the people of barnsley have got to support local music, if they dont they have to get national headliners in to draw enough people to make it work, this in turn gives any local band playing a decent crowd (hopefully) who may decide actually..... that band from town are quite good, il go down the arches to see them next week.. just an idea like!

You're making a fair point, but I'm also a big Senser fan, and if I wasn't in Greece on the 25th would have come along to see them. Back to the Planet were a second rate dog on a string band years ago when the Levellers were big, as they often supported them.

Tax payers are not contributing to BOMFEST as BMBC are not funding it wholly or partly.

They funded it once as a gesture of goodwill to save it from folding.

So I suggest you get your facts right before posing innacurate comments on a public forum.

I dont know what you've done for music in Barnsley, nor do I particularly care.

You tried to stir up trouble by insinuating (tax payers) BMBC paid for BOMFest, which they dont, thats why I responded.

    RE: To be fair Matt

I'd have put Barnsley Council Tax if i meant that, it might have come across like that but i didn't mean BMBC were involved. They have pumped money into it before as Spectemur Agendo has said and i'm informed there's been funding from other places over the years too. Which is a good thing to help get Barnsley bands get out there and playing to a different crowd but this years is a joke, sticking them all away in a tent.

Which probably came from lottery funding rather than taxation

so which funding body is funded by my taxes and is paying for bomfest?

You say that barnsley tax payers are funding it but you've failed to give any example at all of how

RE: so which funding body is funded by my taxes and is paying for bomfest?

don't you pay income tax or vat etc that is passed on to organisations like the art council. I put barnsley tax payers as the fest is in barnsley and the bands it's meant to support are in barnsley.

    RE: bomfest

i think the fact tax money was used once 'as a gesture of goodwill' was bad enough. Plenty of organisations seem to be able to function without going cap in hand to the council, or whoever. My main gripe, and this is the one i hear from the majority of people in town, is the name 'Barnsley Original Music', when, rather than help local bands, they're more concerned with what barnsley bands can do for them. In return they all get shoved in a tent together.
Anyway, not enough bands will have the balls, like X-Rippers, to boycott it.
