Maybe a little harsh, but I've seen them twice, and I'm seeing them at the NME show on Saturday and they aren't that good. I'm not saying they're **** by any means, but how much longer before their bubble bursts?
Maximo Park were much better last night in Leeds, and hardly anyone saw them; half the crowd fecked off after the Monkeys. It's just a fad. Within the next six months a new band will have come along, NME will say that they are amazing and they'll be the next Libertines / Arctic Monkeys, etc.
Excellent show last night anyway. Mystery Jets were ok, We are Scientists were really good, everyone went mad for the Monkeys and those of us that stayed were treated to an amazing set by Maximo Park.
NB: For anyone wanting a ticket to the remaining NME shows, the touts had loads last night in Leeds and couldn't get rid of them. We were offered tickets by touts for between £25 - 40 (depending on the touts, and how close you were to the venue).

Can't believe that people left after the AM I mean Maximo Park are the Mercury nominated headliners right ?
RE: Can't believe that people left after the AM Yeah, and not only that, they were the best band of the night.
This is what annoys me. Maximo Park are better than the Arctic Monkeys, but don't get anywhere near as much media coverage (NME, BBC) and as a result, no-one really knows their stuff. All of their recent singles have gone in to Band C (or whatever the official terminology is) where as AM stuff goes in Band A. What chance does anyone have when all the radio plays is Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, etc?

RE: Can't believe that people left after the AM Not sure that you can say that "Maximo Park are better than the Arctic Monkeys". Sure, you can say that in your opinion they are better, but you cannot categorically state that they definitely ARE better. I quite like MP, but they haven't set my ears on fire in a way that the Arctic Monkeys have. I'm 34 and I was getting jaded with the music scene, when all it could throw up recently was the likes of Keane and Franz Ferdinand, sure they can pop out a tune, but you want to smash their middle class smug artsy faces in whilst listening. Theres been nothing in the British music scene will any balls since Oasis (and I didn't really like them, but they had it) and no one has crafted decent a song that told a story since Pulp (exception - The Streets). The Monkeys have made me sit up and listen to new music again, they have attitude, they have tunes, they have stories to tell. A worthy addition to the line of Beatles - Stones - Kinks - Sex Pistols - Joy Division - Jam - Madness - Smiths - Stone Roses - Pulp - ????
I can't believe people left after the Arctic Monkeys, thats pretty out of order.
I can't wait for the Brixton gig, I have the albums for We are Scientists, AM and Maximo Park, and I think all three are excellent. But even if I wasn't too keen on Maximo I wouldn't leave before they'd even come on. The tracks that Mystery Jets have released are good too so it will be intesting to see what they were like live.
I honestly think that there is a band waggon with Arctic Monkeys and some people are just going to see them because everyone else says they should. Any true music fan would stick around- if you go to a festival you see all the music there, not just your favourite.

RE: Can't believe that people left after the AM Fully agree, I have the MP album, and find it a bit dull to be honest.
RE: Can't believe that people left after the AM So first you say "how can he say that one is better than another" stating it's only opinion and then you give a list of worthy bands! (Which fell apart after the Pistols in my opinion). Without a doubt there's a lot of hype surrounding the Artic Monkeys, it's the "in-thing" to like, granted the band themselves are trying to distance themselves from it, or say they are, it could be argued that’s all part of the image and the hype anyway. People say they achieved through word of mouth rather than the hype of the NME etc, well isn't that just a different type of hype? Loads of students passing tapes round saying "you've got to listen to this, it's brilliant" - that's just a different form of hype, it's hype by your peers.
RE: Can't believe that people left after the AM Its all opinion. As for hype, well, hype is hype, its always been around, so what if a band is getting a lot of publicity.
The NME hypes a lot of bands then the ones which don't become popular get forgotten. The ones which do become mainstream then just face a barrage of criticism for being "hyped". Everyone loves to have an opinion. I can't help but feel that a large proportion of people will just dislike a band because they are popular.
I totally agree Zadok, when I saw AM dont get me wrong I was impressed and I think they are a decent band but I have seen many bands that dont get their cocks sucked by NME everyweek that can blow them off the stage in a musical sense
at nottingham half the people went too after am. maximo park were very good live and much better than arctic monkeys (who were also good). they have a bizzare 'act'. every one of them looks totally different but weird in their own way. lead singer puts everything into it - its not like a bunch of songs played, its like an act from start to finish especially the song where he gets the book out. in between songs he doesnt appear to be able to talk either and was very polite thanking people for coming to watch them, and you could tell he really did mean it. got a mate who went to the after party where arctic monkeys turned up. supposedly the bassist is an arsehole. is one of em from barnsley? the guitarist certainly isnt he wore a retro shef wed shirt.
RE: what about in a non musical sense though? In an oral sex sense or a bigbad wolf/three little pigs sense?
