As far as I am aware... ... it was born in the 1950s as a dish invented by and served at the Alhambra Hotel in Barnsley, which was next door to the Alhambra Theatre.
The theatre closed in 1960, but I seem to recall a big spread about the hotel / pub and their "exclusive" dish known as the Barnsley Chop, later on in the sixties.
NextI heard of it was at a steakhouse in London's leicester Square who had it on the menu around 1979. I ordered it and got a butterfly lamb chop.
Also ordered it at brooklands in late 70s and was given a whole saddle of lamb that took up all my plate and left me not wanting owt to eat for 5 days.
I'm sure it originates at the old Alhambra hotel, and I also seem to remember the Chron doing some kind of spread on it during the sixties.

RE: As far as I am aware... Thanks. My only onfo was from a Mike Parkinson book that claimed his uncle, the chef at the Royal Hotel' had invented it.
