When we have so much going wrong in our own country right now, enough to fill volumes, why does the BBC insist on giving us a blow by blow, detailed rundown of the USA election in prime place on every news programme? I personally do not give a damn about someone else's college vote or percentage gain at the expense of our own events, which in my mind should take top priority. What is the BBC's agenda in this?
Sky is the same. How much have these companies spent sending correspondents to the US to cover these elections and swamp our media channels? Can you imagine if they did this for the German or French elections and the uproar from the brextremists and "free speechers"? I mean, they never even gave the EU elections this much coverage. It just shows the constant biases in our media. Huge focus on the US, hardly any coverage of the rest of the world, and yesterday, even curtailing the coverage of the "debate" in the commons on a topic meaning people should stay at home more. The real dialogue that we've seen for played through our media increasingly for 40 years is a concerted push by groups that want us to be holding onto the coat tails of the US and not be part of the EU.
A handy distraction to the **** storm this Tory govt is having trying to get to grips with their test and trace shambles. We, the public are being denied the truth about exactly what is going on in the UK.
Probably nothing extra (or not much). The major news channels have correspondents based permanently in the USA that report back on key events over there - natural disasters, shootings, terrorist attacks and presidential elections - or share resources with partners in the USA. Didn't GMTV have that showbusiness guy based in LA for years?
The main sky daytime crew have been flown out. BBC have flown out numerous members of their daytime news teams. Yes, they may have a handful of correspondents out there, but not the huge media operations they've had for the last week. I don't watch GMTV, so I couldn't tell you what they've done, but its not something I'd consider to be a credible news channel.
This is what you get when a Government imposes Heads of institutions. Diversionary tactics to bore the nation instead of publishing facts about the incompetence of his paymasters.
How about it’s nothing more than they show it because it’s a far reaching very important world event that will very much effect us, while most of the COVID stuff is very slow moving and repetitive. Or is that too simplistic?
Well personally when I put news on to find out abart the daily new changes to rules and regs on the covid and find this American sh ite on then off goes the tv.
Let's be real, everyone's attention is on the US election at the minute. What's happening there is a, completely bonkers and b, of huge importance to the UK and the rest of the world I know I've been checking it every 10 minutes since Tuesday night!
I personally think it's been fascinating. Conference from Trumpton at 4.30. Can't wait to see what they come out with...
I think it's something to do with the fact that a psychopathic serial liar, racist, sexist, incompetent childish and very, very dangerous man could be re-elected to lead the free world. And if not he will stir up his redneck supporters to violently oppose the result and refuse to concede, destroying any semblance of democratic process, hence the shops are being boarded up in anticipation. Another unprecedented situation which would threaten the stability of the Western world. Or it could be something else...
I'd be interested to see how much US news hits our screens in comparison to what we hear about our near neighbours and from countries with a Union we've been members of for 40 years. My perception is its way over and above what it should be. When you consider we're in brexit talks, have just had an extension of furlough announced off the back of a 4 week lockdown and hundreds of people are dieing every day, frankly, Trump being a serial psychopath... well, thats not news. That he's mentally unwell is, but we don't hear that. Brazil, China and Russia have leaders and structures which have major issues. Yet they hardly appear in our news, especially Russia given how much issue they've caused in recent times and their very strong links with numerous UK politicians. If the UK media wants to have a more global reach and inform us of wider matters, I fully expect lengthier coverage of the next EU elections. Whats happening in Japan, China, Brazil and Russia and across the booming regions in Africa. But of course we won't. We'll just be force fed an all you can eat media buffet of the US til we're as fat, bloated and too lazy to seek something of much more interest.
If people can't see the consequences of what's going on in America right now for the rest of western democracy then there's not much hope. Confidence in a robust (if arcane) electoral system is deliberately being trashed by someone who will stop at nothing to stay in power. You think there aren't others in other democratic countries including the UK who are watching to see if he can get away with it? What's happening in America could easily happen here especially if people are dim enough to ignore it.
I don’t think there’s a BBC ‘Agenda’ here. The Americans speak English. That’s the only language most Brits speak so they can readily understand what’s going on in the USA. Of course the German election (for example) is more important and will have a much greater impact on Britain, but people generally can’t speak German and are not exposed to the German/French/Spanish versions of ‘Friends’. Simples.
