That's the exact spot I stood with Dad when he first took me down to Oakwell. I've a tear in my eye now
Funnily enough, that's where my friends & I stood from August 1982 to May 1994 when standing on the terracing at Oakwell came to an end.
During that time I stood in the middle of the Ponty end behind the goal with my mates. Then over to the East stand when standing was abolished. Then back behind the Ponty end goal when the new stand was built
I've sat on the same row now since August 2003. Although this season my seat went from 134 to 132 on Row BB.
Also my first game sat on one of those barriers, held by my father. Not one of those softy rectangular ones, a round one, very uncomfortable. Just checked, 18th February 1961 versus Luton Town, 1-0 win, 32,923 paying £6,604. Still remember the roar when Lunn scored just in front of us, from then on I was hooked. A lifetime ago, hundreds of games and more £'s than I care to think about but no regrets.
evocative, eh? makes you think of yer dad and grandad, yer mates as a kid. the great matches and the players who you idolised. Tommy Taylor. 1912. Barnsley Boys. The Rev Tiverton Preedy. Chansiri Stadium? property developers? god forbid...
I wonder when that photo was taken. I'm sure I remember in the 70s the Kop was half concrete steps and half muck and rubble??.
I can't remember any other lights . I remember they used to come on as a cluster and took ages to warm up. I'm sure I stand to be corrected but I think they played Greenock Morton as the first game under lights ?
