No doubt you will be aware that today is the centenary of our greatest victory. Back in September 2011 I was very lucky to meet a Barnsley fan from Blackpool who told me a quite remarkable story. In around 1980 he had been working in the West Midlands and had struck up a conversation with a local. Things quickly got onto the subject of football and the local said he had quite a few films of West Bromwich Albion in his cellar. As a bit of a laugh the Barnsley fan asked "I bet you don't have anything from the 1912 final" and the reply came "I doubt it, but I will have a look". Needless to say, a few days later, the local returned with the comment "Yes, theres an old Cinema reel of film marked "1912 Final". The Barnsley fan then payed a vast amount of money to have a third party transfer this original "Nitrate" film onto VHS and was able to watch its contents. After a few weeks of watching the grainy, black and white footage he put the VHS in his loft and thats were it has remained until February of this year. The film is of the drawn game at the Cystal Palace and runs to a couple of minutes which I believe is unique for a pre-WW1 Cup Final. It features the usual match action and crowd scenes but this interestingly begins with a cameo of the West Bromwich Albion captain Jesse Pennington and then a shot of the Barnsley team "Getting fit" in the sea of Lytham St Annes. I have now transferred the VHS onto DVD and re-edited the film as a couple of reels were in the wrong order. The club will be giving the film its first public performance since April 1912 at this evenings Player of the Year Dinner but ... Of course, I know not everyone will be attending the event so to commenorate the winning of the FA Cup in 1912 I give you. 1912 Final at Crystal Palace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVvsX46NT3E And just to finish the story I have cobbled this together .... Sorry about the music. 1912 Final Replay at Bramall Lane http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e92hZ4mQZXU Enjoy and thanks to Mr Lavelle of Blackpool
Re: Wonderful Absolutely terrific, TT! Great work! One or two observations occur to me: 1. Why are they holding hands, running through the waves? 2. Was that Thereev in the middle? 3. How come the referee was so fit in the first game? He's in every picture! Anyway, I think the still of the team from the second film, with the F.A. Cup should be printed off and put up in every home and office today! Something to celebrate amidst the present gloom! YoooooooooooReddddddddssss!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to get home and watch this. Not a mention of this glorious day on our website. Quelle f-ing surprise
We keep looking to the past at Barnsley FC. That's cos there's nowt to look forward to Keef! Is it worth anyone coming on Sat, seeing as you "not bothered"?
