It had on a farmer from Penistone called Ryan. I liked him until he said he's from Barnsley but tells people Sheffield as they have heard of that.

Actually, when I speak to someone foreign, I always tell them I'm from near Leeds or Sheffield...

Same reason the lad on the chase said. Folk abroad just don't know where Barnsley is, just saves time when they inevitably say 'is that near london?'

Irrespective of where I am when I've been asked, I always say Dodworth. This is usually followed up by the questioner "Oh and where's Dodworth near?". "Higham, Silkstone & Silkstone Common" tends to be my reply.

That's just ****** & lying. Educate them & look them straight in the eye & proudly proclaim tha from Tarn, if they don't know where Barnsley is or never heard of Barnsley , that's their problem. If you keep lying to them them they'll never hear of Barnsley, your part of the problem.:)

I said to the Wife , can't believe he muttered Barnsley then said Sheffield,of course people have heard of Barnsley. When i get talking to folk abroad they ask if ia'm from Barnsley (talk quite broad) and i say no but i support em. Most of em haven't heard of Featherstone but they have Featherstone Rovers lol. America is the best they think you are from London and everyone knows the Queen.

the “where do you live?” conversation usually goes like this.

    “wakefield”
20% UK, 100% of foreigners- blank stare
    “It’s near Leeds”
1% Uk, 40% of foreigners - blank stare
    “Near Manchester”
0% UK, 15% of foreigners (still 80% of Americans) - blank stare.
    “Near London.”
Everyone knows where you live now.

I know mate, shame on me. :D I edited my comment btw, I meant to say 'near' leeds/sheffield. It just saves the hassle as wakeyred can attest to above!! I know a lot of people from Scandinavia, and to their credit, a lot of them know Yorkshire cities... not little old barnsley though. :p

I say I'm from Bingley. Blank.
    Near Bradford. Blank.
Near Leeds. Usually gets a nod.

If I need to impress, Bingley becomes part of South Harrogate.

That’s stretching credulity a bit!. I live in High Harrogate but always say I am from Barnsley. Have been doing so since I was first asked back in 1970 when I joined the RAF. Never had to explain where it is.

Lived in Surrey 32 years now, still got my Barnsley accent and usually say I live in Egham but I'm from Barnsley originally. Proud of my roots and always will be
