i am surprised people are in favour of this system now. When Paul Hart played it, he had nothing but criticism.

It seemed to work when Williams was here, though. Hourihane played his best football in that system too. Ideally I'd prefer us to play with width, but sadly, it's a struggle getting Hourihane effectively into a flat midfield four.

The difficulty is finding a system that will get the best out of both Hourihane and Winnall. Winnall cannot play on his own up front, which means we have to find a system that allows 2 up front. Hourihane cannot play in a flat midfield four because he is not strong enough defensively. The two are probably our best two players, but seem incompatible.

As I see it, the diamond seems to be our best chance of getting them in the same team, but the diamond needs a midfield player driving us forward at the attacking point, hence the optimism with the Williams rumour. The diamond also needs two wing backs who are capable of giving us the width going forward. I am not sure whether Smith and Bree are ready just yet as the work loads on them will be intense, so I would like to see some help for them out wide. We also need more forwards. Nevertheless, the Williams signing, if true and if he makes the impact he did when we had him before, offers grounds for optimism amongst fans for the first time in weeks.

    They predominantly played a 3-5-2.

Depends on the players not just the system. Its clear we haven't brought enough players in to have that many options on formations.
