Trying to think if we have ever had twin brothers playing for us other than Ron and Paul Futcher. I suspect not.

Just been watching some classic Man City games recorded from BT Sport last night, all in the 1970s and one of them was at the start of the 78/79 season. Ron Futcher was making his debut at Chelsea, and he scored a hat trick! Paul made one fantastic surging run out of defence to set up an attack. Both cracking players, though obviously Paul was the better of the two for us. He played a lot more games as well.

Great watching 70s football with the shocking pitches, terracing, no sponsors names all over the kit. Oh, and the first one, in 71, was a cup game at Chelsea where both teams had to change strips because of the clash - that never happens these days. It was filmed in black and white as well.

Imagine having a forward line with men like Mike Summerbee, Francis Lee, Colin Bell, Neil Young, Rodney Marsh and Mike Shannon in it (not all at the same time, obviously). Oh, and NO foreign players anywhere, unless you count the Scots, Welsh and Irish

As you love pulling up other posters over spelling/typos...may I point out his name was Mick Channon...

Yes you are right - can't believe I did that! That's what happens when you have both eyes on the TV and none on the computer screen. Usually read my posts as well but obviously didn't this time.

Yes but I haven't looked that far back to see if they were in the same team together - I would guess they were. Also, were they identical twins? Paul and Ron certainly were.

I'd love Paul in the side now. Arguably our best centre half in my time watching the reds.

    Talking of which.....

Older readers may remember Ron's hat-trick at Charlton in 85 when he also missed a penalty, got sent off and we lost 5-3 after being 3 up. Ron thereby became (I think) only the 2nd ever player to score a hat-trick and get sent off in the same game.

Much better was Paul's surge out of defence to score in our 5-2 win at West Ham in 87 after being 2-0 down. That's still the best win I've ever seen us have.

    A pedant writes...

Gordon Owen missed the penalty at Charlton.

And the only goal Paul Futcher ever scored for us was an own goal when he was playing for Oldham!

Really? Twice? I remember it being Ron at Charlton but if you insist. As for West Ham it's on youtube so I can check. I do remember Paul's run and someone sliding it past the keeper. It was in extra-time, the third or fourth. Can you remember who it was? I was at the other end of the ground on the North bank with the home fans.

In the days before we sold video or DVDs of our memorable matches I bought the video version of that West Ham win from THEIR club shop by mail order and I still have it. I bet not one Hammers fan bought it

To be fair to the Hammers fans they joined in singing We Love You Barnsley We Do and even cheered John McDonald's goal, the fifth (though I may be corrected). I certainly wouldn't have bought it if we'd lost 5-2. Mind you I didn't buy it even though we won.

Much as I love Brian and indeed Paul mcGugan. Futcher just made everything look so easy.

I'd put him and Big Mick up there together but for me Futch just shades it.
